Due to my work travel, I will be visiting Inuvik, NT from Feb. 24-28. Using this opportunity, I plan on renting a car to take photographs that are highlighted as "needing photos" in Wikidata through WikiShootMe! tool in the Gwich'in Settlement Area in Northwest Territories. These photos will be uploaded to Commons and linked to Wikidata to enrich the coverage of Canadian Indigenous group, its culture and geographical places. == List of participants == Indicate here the list of participants that will incur expenses for this activity; you do not need to list all participants that will take part in the activity. It allowed quick lookup at the map and upload to Commons immediately after taking a photo, minimizing mis-identification of buildings and geographic features in the process. Many of the former Indian residential school sites were demolished and replaced by other buildings on the same plot of land, which could create some confusion and require additional explanation in the description of the images to clarify the relationship between the current buildings and the former usage of the sites. One of the major issue I identified after returning home was the erroneous description for many Wikidata entries. Many of the items needing photos were water channels yet the Wikidata description identified them as peninsulas. This caused me to take a lot of pictures of peninsulas and islands when I should be focusing on the channels, tributaries and river mouths. Furthermore, in one particular instance, I drove 45 mins in search of a remote research station (Trail Valley Creek) and weather station (Trail Valley) but could not find either, which I suspect was due to incorrect map location on Wikidata. Alternatively, the path to these two sites might not be plowed and accessible in winter. In both cases, since there was no internet available, I could not look up online to verify the water channels nor the remote research & weather station locations. This highlighted the importance of having accurate Wikidata description and metadata of an item. Having offline access to tools or the ability to download an offline copy of a map with coordinates marked (currently not available) will better support similar types of work in the future. Since these northern locations are all above the Arctic Circle, the sunset time is early and the sunrise is late in winter relative to southern locations. It reduced the window for me to take photos during the day. Local community landmarks, particularly shops that are beneficial to travellers, do not have Wikidata entry due to their lack of notability and were missed while I was in the community because they did not appear on the map for needing photos. A longer car rental, while being slightly more expensive, would allow more time to go through the photo list more thoroughly and cover more community infrastructure and attractions. ===Gallery=== Snippet of photos that were uploaded: <gallery> Alestine's winter outdoor 1.jpg|Popular local restaurant in Inuvik with the school bus turned into the kitchen Inuvik-Aklavik ice road.jpg|Beginning of the Inuvik-Aklavik ice road Mackenzie River Middle Channel along Aklavik ice road.jpg|Ice reflecting the sun on the Inuvik-Aklavik ice road Hamlet of Aklavik office.jpg|Aklavik hamlet office Aklavik-Fort McPherson ice road with Richardson Mountains in background.jpg|Aklavik-Fort McPherson ice road is a ~160km, community-maintained ice road linking two communities in winter. This year the event will held at our new campus in Brampton, in the Bikram S. Dhillon and Family Medical Library. This will be a tremendous opportunity for the main campus to connect with the medical learner community, and is very much in line with the goals of our new medical school to focus on issues germane to First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples. We will kick off the event with a keynote led by one of our local Indigenous scholars, yet to be determined pending availability and funding. We will offer optional editor training for Wikipedia beginners after the keynote, otherwise the event will be a drop-in. Anyone who makes a Wikipedia edit as part of the event will be entered into a raffle to win gift cards to local Black-owned businesses. == List of participants == Indicate here the list of participants that will incur expenses for this activity; you do not need to list all participants that will take part in the activity.
