Wickremesinghe was named as the next President on Wednesday following a vote in Sri Lanka's Parliament with the backing of Rajapaksa's ruling party, the Sri Lanka's People's Front. Rajapaksa was forced to flee the country before tendering his resignation from Singapore on July 14. This followed months of unrest in protest of an economic crisis blamed on the Rajapaksa administration. Also, "Wickremesinghe needs to restore political stability". Needs? No, he is AIMING TO (BBC), and Al Jazeera only quotes Jayasuriya when describing Wickremesinghe's "immediate tasks".
