Kom jij op het feest in Utrecht? En zou je het leuk vinden als je dan niet alleen huidige collega’s kan ontmoeten, maar ook mensen van vroeger? Mensen die je de laatste jaren niet meer ziet? Ook door hen is Wikipedia gegroeid en sterk geworden. Help jij mee om hen uit te nodigen voor het feest, zodat we samen kunnen proosten op de toekomst?

Ik zou je daarom willen vragen om oud-collega’s, mensen die de Nederlandstalige Wikipedia of Wikisource om wat voor reden dan ook verlaten hebben, uit te nodigen. Mensen met wie jij het goed kon vinden. Heb je een mailadres? Stuur zo iemand een persoonlijk mailtje, waarin je zegt hoe leuk je het zou vinden als die persoon komt. Men heeft het buitendien in zijne magt, om het vuur plotseling uit te dooven en eveneens het in een paar minuten weder in vollen gloed te zetten. Welligt kan ook het branden van ruw petroleum in locomotieven eenig voordeel opleveren.

Het ligt voor de hand, dat het petroleum een uitstekend materiaal voor het bereiden van lichtgas oplevert, en het zal onze lezers geenszins verwonderen, dat de Amerikanen, die het ruwe petroleum tot zeer 'lagen prijs kunnen verkrijgen, er reeds de proef van genomen hebben, of zij uit petroleum goedkooper gas konden stoken dan uit steenkolen of niet. Het resultaat van hun onderzoek daaromtrent pleit zeer ten gunste van het ruwe petroleum.

Eene proef, in het groot te Homer gedaan, leverde deze uitkomst op, dat, voor eene gelijke hoeveelheid licht, het petroleumgas in het ongunstigste geval nog slechts de helft zou kosten van hetgeen men voor het steenkolengas moet betalen. En hierbij is nog niet in rekening gebragt, dat men veel minder ingewikkelde toestellen noodig heeft om het gas te zuiveren, dat er minder teer wordt geproduceerd, dat er minder retorten breken, enz.

Al het gezegde is echter slechts toepasselijk op Amerika en mag geenszins algemeen gesteld worden. Het ruwe petroleum wordt door het transport naar Europa zooveel duurder, dat men er waarschijnlijk geene rekening bij maken zou, zoo men daar de steenkolen bij de gasfabricatie door petroleum wilde vervangen.

De ingenieur {{sc|g. bower}}, te St. Neots (Huntingdonshire), die zich door eene proef omtrent de kosten van het petroleumgas in vergelijking van dien van het steenkolengas eenige zekerheid wilde verschaffen, bevond, dat het eerste hem voor dezelfde hoeveelheid licht op 1} maal zooveel te staan kwam als het laatste. Waarschijnlijk heeft men bij de bepaling van de lichtsterkte wel eens over het hoofd gezien, dat het gas uit petroleum gestookt zeer koolhoudend is en, om goed licht te kunnen geven, volkomen moet verbranden. Bij gebruik van onze gewone branders en lampenglazen heeft dit niet volkomen plaats, en daardoor verliest de vlam aanzienlijk in lichtsterkte. In elk geval zal het petroleumgas met vrucht kunnen gebruikt worden om het lichtgas te verbeteren, dat uit hout wordt gestookt (zooals in Zweden en Rusland) of uit turf (zooals in Beieren en Bohemen).

''Naphta''. De naphta bevat de ligtere koolwaterstoffen, waarvan het kookpunt ligt tusschen 30° en 120° à 150°. Het vlugtigste gedeelte daarvan, een soortelijk gewigt hebbende van 0.650, is in den laatsten tijd onder den naam van Kerosolen in den handel gebragt en is door Dr. sNow aanbevolen als anaesthetisch middel in plaats van het dure chloroform.

Overigens heeft men voor de naphta reeds verschillende nuttige toepassingen gevonden, die hier verdienen vermeld te worden. Men gebruikt ze in Engeland onder den naam van benzine, turpentinesubstitute of petroleum-spirit, vooral in plaats van terpentijnolie of terpentijn tot het aanlengen van olieverw; en het schijnt, dat het surrogaat hier inderdaad de voorkeur verdient. {{sc|Tate}} geeft aan, dat de verw, die met naphta is aangelengd, beter vloeit, beter dekt en minder onaangenaam riekt dan die met terpentijn is bereid. Ook meent hij, dat de geverwde voorwerpen een fraaijeren glans krijgen. Intusschen is het niet moeijelijk de naphta geheel van die zwavelhoudende stof te ontdoen en daardoor vervalt dus van zelf het bovengemelde bezwaar.

Eene tweede grief, die men tegen de naphta als surrogaat van terpentijn bij het verwen heeft ingebragt, is deze, dat de verw te spoedig droogt, en zelfs reeds in de kwast taai en hard wordt. Het Is ontegenzeggelijk, dat dit ongerief alleen het gevolg kan zijn daarvan, dat de naphta te vlugtig is. Wanneer men ze zoodanig maakt, dat haar soortelijk gewigt ongeveer 0.725—0.785 bedraagt, heeft men juist een mengsel, dat volkomen voldoet; maar neemt men alweêr te veel van de zwaardere bestanddeelen, zoo vervalt men in een ander ongerief, namelijk dat de verw te langzaam droogt.

Van veel nut is de naphta voor het oplossen van zeer vele stoffen, waarvan vernissen worden bereid, zooals asphalt, venetiaansche terpentijn en caoutchouc, en voor het verwijderen van vet uit weefsels van allerlei aard. Wij mogen echter niet verzwijgen, dat, ofschoon inderdaad vet in naphta wordt opgelost, deze stof in zeker opzigt bij benzol&lt;ref&gt;De benzol uit steenkolenteer is geen zelfstandig ligchaam, maar een mengsel van verschillende stoffen, in kookpunt en soortelijk gewigt verschillende; hiervan maakt zelfs het eigenlijke benzol soms slechts een klein gedeelte uit.&lt;/ref&gt; als vlekkenwater achterstaat. Benzol lost vet veel sneller op; het oplossend vermogen is bij benzol niet zoo veel grooter, want naar eene proef, die ik onlangs nam, bleek mij, dat bij de middelbare temperatuur naphta (bevattende stoffen van 30 —100° kookpunt) 44 %, benzol iets meer dan 50 %, vet (kaarsvet) oploste. Wat het oplossen van harsen betreft, er zijn er, die in naphta slecht worden opgenomen; daaronder behooren vooral dammar, barnsteen en schellak.

Eindelijk willen wij met een enkel woord vermelden, dat men naphta ook heeft aanbevolen als surrogaat van spiritus, tot het bewaren van anatomische praeparaten en zelfs met wijngeest en ammoniak gemengd als geneesmiddel tegen het rheumatisme.

Niettegenstaande alzoo de naphta tot velerlei doeleinden bruikbaar is, is de prijs daarvan tot nog toe betrekkelijk zeer laag gebleven. Te&lt;noinclude&gt;{{smallrefs}}&lt;/noinclude&gt;</text>

De reden hiervan ligt in de omstandigheid, dat er veel meer naphta wordt geproduceerd, dan men vooralsnog slijten en gebruiken kan. Deze productie is in zeker opzigt een noodzakelijk kwaad, en elk raffinadeur van petroleum zou niet ongaarne al zijne naphta in petroleum veranderd zien. Was het verbruik van naphta even zoo groot als dat van de lampolie, dan zou ongetwijfeld de prijs van deze laatste onder de bestaande omstandigheden dalen, terwijl hij min of meer moet worden opgevoerd door het verkrijgen van een betrekkelijk schadelijk bij-product.

''Lampolie''. Het uiterlijk aanzien van de lampolie, zooals zij in den handel voorkomt, is over het algemeen vrij wel gelijk, nu eens kleurloos, dan eens wat meer geelachtig. Het soortelijk gewigt wisselt af van 0.780 tot 0. 825. Zal het petroleum tot het branden in lampen worden gebezigd, zoo moet het voldoen aan zekere vereischten, die wij boven reeds hebben aangeduid. Het moet bevrijd zijn van al te ligte en al te zware bestanddeelen en eerst bij 120°—150° beginnen te koken. Is dit het geval niet, dan kan het branden van petroleum wezenlijk gevaarlijk zijn, omdat er ontploffingen kunnen plaats hebben, waardoor de ballon, die de olie bevat, breekt en deze laatste brandend overal heen wordt verspreid.

Velen verkeeren in het denkbeeld, dat petroleum afs zoodanig explosieve eigenschappen heeft en, even als buskruid, bij verhooging van temperatuur eensklaps ontbrandt en ontploft. Ja zelfs heb ik door onkundigen wel eens hooren beweren, dat door het storten van petroleum op een houten vloer deze dadelijk in brand geraken zou. Deze vrees is geheel ongerijmd; want petroleum ontvlamt onder gewone omstandigheden in geen geval, tenzij het met een brandend ligchaam in aanraking wordt gebragt en oefent geen de minste hevige scheikundige werking op hout en dergelijke stoffen uit.

Het gevaar, waarvoor men zich heeft te wachten, is van tweeërlei aard en spruit eensdeels voort uit de brandbaarheid van de stof zelf. Uit dit oogpunt beschouwd is het petroleum stellig veel gevaarlijker dan raapolie; want terwijl petroleum uit den handel, op een schoteltje uitgegoten en tot 50—60° C, verwarmd, door een vlammend&lt;noinclude&gt;&lt;/noinclude&gt;</text>

Eerst bij zeer hooge temperatuur (300° C.) worden vette oliën ontleed en deze ontleding moet altijd voorafgaan, voordat de olie in brand geraken kan, omdat het eigenlijk de gasvormige ontledingsproducten van de olie zijn, die branden en geenszins de olie zelf. In zeker opzigt kan men petroleum zelfs gevaarlijker noemen dan wijngeest (alcohol of spiritus); want wel is waar kan men het laatste ligter dan het eerste doen ontvlammen, maar daarentegen zal de brandende spiritus door water kunnen worden uitgedoofd, omdat het water zich met den spiritus vermengt, terwijl daarentegen het petroleum, omdat het zich niet met water vermengt en daarop brandende blijft drijven, niet zoo gemakkelijk zal kunnen beteugeld worden.

Een gevaar van anderen aard, dat zich bij het branden van petroleum kan voordoen, is dit, dat wanneer het petroleum niet goed is geraffineerd en er zich zeer vlugtige producten (van 30°—120° kookpunt) in bevinden, deze door de warmte, die van de vlam uitstraalt of die zich door geleiding mededeelt, in damp overgaan en met lucht gemengd, een werkelijk ontplof baar gasmengsel geven, bijna even gevaarlijk als een mengsel van lichtgas of mijngas en lucht, dat, zooals bekend is, door ontploffingen hevige verwoestingen aanrigten kan.

Dergelijke ontploffing kan bij het gebruik van slecht geraffineerd petroleum vooral dan plaats hebben, wanneer het olie-reservoir slechts ten deele daarmede is gevuld. De lucht, die zich boven de vloeistof bevindt, wordt zeer spoedig met brandbare dampen bedeeld, en de verbranding behoeft zich maar even aan een enkel deeltje van het gas mede te deelen om de geheele massa te doen ontvlammen en daardoor eene ontploffing te doen ontstaan.

Wanneer het petroleum goed geraffineerd is en de lamp doelmatig is ingerigt, zal men hiervoor niet te vreezen hebben. Van zeer vele ontploffingen door petroleum is het bewezen, dat zij het gevolg waren van het gebruik van een niet of slecht geraffineerd materiaal of ook daarvan, dat men olie, die te zwaar en te dik was en daardoor niet gemakkelijk in de pit opsteeg, door het toevoegen van naphta zocht te verbeteren.

Bij eene temperatuur van 16° C. verdampten van gelijke hoeveelheden van de producten hieronder vermeld, over dezelfde oppervlakte uitgespreid, in 75 minuten de volgende hoeveelheden:

Vergelijkt men de bestanddeelen van petroleum, wier kookpunt onder 100° C. ligt, ten opzigte van vlugtigheid met aether, zwavelkoolstof en alcohol, zoo blijkt het, dat van deze drie de eerste twee vlugtiger zijn, de laatste daarentegen minder vlugtig is dan de voormelde bestanddeelen van petroleum. Gerectificeerd petroleum is echter minder vlugtig dan alcohol.

In den laatsten tijd draagt men er meer zorg voor dan vroeger, dat slechts geraffineerd petroleum als lampolie in den handel wordt gebragt. Volkomene zekerheid omtrent de deugdelijkheid van de gekochte handelswaar kan men echter niet verkrijgen, tenzij men ze op hare vlugtigheid onderzoeke en zich overtuige, bij welke temperatuur zij ontvlambare dampen ontwikkelt. Kan men met een brandenden zwavelstok petroleum, dat op een schoteltje is uitgegoten, dadelijk aansteken, zoo is het ten eenenmale onbruikbaar. Eerst wanneer de olie tot minstens 40° C. is verhit, zal eene goede petroleum-soort bij de nadering van een brandend ligchaam vlam vatten.

Onlangs heeft men toestellen in den handel gebragt, waarvan men zich bedienen kan om petroleum langs een meer zekeren en doelmatigen weg te keuren. De volgende afbeelding moge strekken om de inrigting van een dergelijk door {{sc|casartelli}} uitgedacht werktuig toe te lichten.

waaraan een blikken buisje is gesoldeerd, waarvan het doel nader zal blijken. Van binnen bevindt zich aan het deksel een blikken buisje CD, dat den thermometer draagt, van onder open is en bovendien eene kleine opening heeft bĳ N. D E is een plankje, dat aan C D bevestigd is en waartegen de thermometer rust. Het buisje K aan de wanden van de wijdere buis H bevestigd, is wijd genoeg om eene katoenen pit door te laten.

Wanneer het werktuig gebruikt zal worden, wordt het deksel van den bak A afgenomen en deze tot L met water, en verder tot M met petroleum gevuld. Men haalt nu door het buisje K eene katoenen pit, die zoo lang is, dat het eene uiteinde een eind wegs in het petroleum uitkomt, en het andere einde iets beneden het punt G reikt, dat op een scherm F is aangeteekend; men drukt voorts het deksel weder op den bak A, zet den thermometer op zijne plaats en steekt het katoenen pitje, dat intusschen petroleum heeft opgezogen, aan. Men zet nu den toestel op een standaard of drievoet en plaatst er een spiritus- of olielamp onder. Wanneer de temperatuur zoo hoog gestegen is, dat het petroleum ontvlambare dampen ontwikkelt, vermengen zich deze met de boven het petroleum voorhanden lucht en vinden een uitweg door de buis naar buiten; het gasmengsel naar boven stijgende, komt eindelijk met de vlam I in aanraking, ontvlamt en veroorzaakt daardoor eene zeer zwakke ontploffing, waar door de vlam wordt uitgedoofd. Men heeft nu slechts den thermometer waar te nemen; deze geeft de temperatuur aan, bij welke het onderzoehte materiaal brandbare dampen ontwikkelt&lt;ref&gt;De hier beschreven toestel is onder eenigzins anderen vorm te bekomen bij de Wed, {{sc|verkerk}}, Lange Nieuwstraat te Utrecht, voor f 12.00.&lt;/ref&gt;. Wanneer eene soort van petroleum nu geheel voldoet aan het vereischte, wat wij zoo even hebben gesteld, kan zij desniettegenstaande nog verworpen worden om eene andere reden, namelijk omdat zij te veel van de zware en moeijelijk vlugtige bestanddeelen van het ruwe petroleum bevat en daardoor moeielijk in de pit trekt en slecht brandt. Wil men zich ook in dit opzigt van hare bruikbaarheid overtuigen, zoo is het best, het soortelijk gewigt daarvan te bepalen. Heeft het petroleum de eerste proef doorgestaan, dan mag zijn soortelijk gewigt bij eene temperatuur van ± 15° C. niet meer bedragen dan 0.820. Ligt het daarboven, dan brandt het petroleum slecht. De beste soorten, die door {{sc|tate}} werden onderzocht, hadden een soortelijk gewigt van 0.790—0.810.

Alvorens wij van het petroleum, als verlichtingsmateriaal beschouwd, afstappen, moeten wij nog een oogenblik stilstaan bij de vraag: of petroleum voordeeliger is dan raapolie of niet. Hoewel bij ons te lande die vraag op dit oogenblik stellig toestemmend mag beantwoord worden, zoo is het moeielijk daaromtrent een overal en in elk opzigt geldend oordeel uit te spreken. Eensdeels zijn de prijzen van elke der beide stoffen niet overal gelijk, en zelfs op dezelfde plaats aan wisseling onderhevig; anderdeels is het petroleum, dat men koopt, niet overal gelijk in zamenstelling en eindelijk is het zeker, dat men bij de verbranding van gelijke hoeveelheden van hetzelfde petroleum niet altijd even veel licht verkrijgt, en dat de inrigting der lamp daarop grooten invloed uitoefent. Zoo is het door proeven uitgemaakt, dat bij hetzelfde verbruik aan petroleum eene lamp met Argandsche pit voordeeliger is dan een met eene platte pit.

Eene proef door mij gedaan, om petroleum met raapolie te vergelijken, gaf het volgende resultaat. Eene moderateurlamp met Argandschen brander (waarvan de diameter was = 25 mill.) verbruikte in 5¾ uur 295 kub. duim olie à 44 cents de liter; eene petroleumlamp met Argandschen brander van dezelfde afmeting verbruikte in 4 uur 180 kub. duim petroleum à 32 cents de kan.
