În general, statele sunt mai puțin durabile decât neamurile; în orice caz, durata neamului n-are a face cu a statului; ba adesea după cum spun unii învățați, statul particular poate fi o piedică pentru dezvoltarea unui neam. Și este dovedit, tot de către învățați, că neamuri mari, rase ilustre n-au fost în stare să infiltreze state particulare pentru ele însele; menirea lor a fost numai să întemeieze pentru alții state puternice, sau să contribuie în mare parte la întemeierea acestora – ca, de pildă, northmanii și slavii. ''Al tău vechi,<br />Caragiale'' == II == ''Frate Vlahuță,'' Ai luat desigur seamă că, deseori, când răspunderea este împărțită la doi, fiecare caută s-o arunce asupra celuilalt: știi vorba românului despre cel care, se lasă pe tânjală. Așa se-ntâmplă la noi, fiind vorba de educația tinerelor generații, când, cu părere de rău, trebuie să constatăm că toate clasele societății, de la cele mai înalte până la cele mai umile, lasă toată grija și aruncă răspunderea întreagă în spinarea școalei. Ia să vedem dacă asta e drept și bine. Socotind vacanțele, duminicile, sărbătorile religioase și naționale – la țară încă și altele, păgânești – fără să mai socotim absențele mai mult sau mai puțin nemotivate, copilul stă la școală 180 zile pe an, câte cinci ceasuri pe zi, adică în total vreo 900 de ceasuri. Anul însă are 8760. Așadar, un copil trăiește sub ochii dascălului a zecea parte a timpului, iar nouă părți din zece și le petrece altundeva. În timpul restrâns cât trăiește copilul la școală, dascălul e strict obligat să-i deie o anumită sumă de învățături – destule, poate prea multe. Credem că n-are să spună cineva cu judecata dreaptă că sarcina dascălului este ușurică. O fi amară orice pâine câștigată cu necaz, dar greu se poate găsi una mai puțin dulce decât a dascălului de la noi, unde familia nu dă nici un ajutor școalei, unde lumea crede că școala este un aparat fabulos, care poate turna prin procedeu mecanic toată știința omenirii în capul oricărui copil – indiferent de capacitatea lui intelectuală și de puterea lui de voință – fără nici o osteneală ori tragere de inimă din partea acestuia. Afară de asta, lumea noastră, în general, mai crede că învățătura are asupra omului o putere fără margini; că, prin școală, omul poate căpăta ceea ce nu s-au îndurat ursitoarele să-i ursească – inteligență, judecată, voință, ba chiar talente; și încă nu numai atâta! că, prin învățătură de carte, ar putea dobândi omul și însușiri sufletești cu care din naștere nu a fost dăruit – acele daruri multe ce nu-i nevoie să le mai numărăm unul câte unul, fiindcă avem în limba noastră un cuvânt, însumându-le minunat pe toate: omenie. Cum am zice, ne-nchipuim că, prin farmecele buchilor, o creatură ursită a fi în toate privințele mediocră poate deveni o persoană de înaltă notorietate, iar un născut fără suflet, nici obraz poate ajunge pildă de omenie pentru vremea lui. Pretindem de la dascăl nici mai mult, nici mai puțin decât să ne facă dintr-un boboc de scaiete un trandafir de lună, o privighetoare dintr-un pui de vrabie, și dintr-un cățelandru de vulpe, un prepelicar de soi. Și să nu uităm că aceste metamorfoze cerem să ni le săvârșească școala în a zecea parte a timpului; căci, cum am arătat, nouă din zece părți și le petrece – bobocul, între bălăriile lui; puiul, sub streașina unde s-a prăsit, și cățelandrul, în vizuină, ori pe lângă cotețe. Ei! trebuie să mărturisim că pretențiile acestea sunt puțin cam exagerate – nu-i așa?… Ar trebui, prin urmare, în interesul educației tinerelor noastre generați, să ne mai moderăm pretențiile față cu școala. Căci ia să ne întrebăm: poate face ea atâtea și astfel de minuni?… N-ar fi vremea să iasă din mintea familiei și societății această nemărginită încredere în închipuita putere magică a învățăturii de carte? N-ar trebui să se convingă odată lumea noastră că-n adevăr școala poate foarte mult, dar nu mai mult de cât poate? că școala e absolut necesară, însă numai pentru ce ne poate da, iar nu pentru îndeplinirea unor dorințe absurde. Și dacă ar fi numai pretenția absurdă?… dar, din păcate, e încă ceva și mai absurd… Școala românească, fără să ne lăudăm, este, despre partea corpului didactic, excelentă; dar dacă nu dă încă, nici ca școală propriu-zis, roadele cuvenite, nu ea este de vină… Numai bunul Dumnezeu și bietul dascăl știu cu câte piedici ce i le pune societatea are să lupte școala pentru a-și îndeplini la limită, datoria proprie… Fi sănătos și vesel! La noi nu e nici mai multă, nici mai puțină stricăciune decât în alte părți ale lumii, și nici nu s-ar putea altfel. Calitățile și defectele omenești sunt pretutindeni aceleași; oamenii sunt peste tot oameni. Limbă, costume, obiceiuri, apucături intelectuale și morale, religii, precum și toate celelalte rezultate ale locului unde au trăit, ale împrejurărilor prin care au trecut, îi pot arăta ca și cum s-ar deosebi mult cei dintr-un loc cu cei dintr-altul; ei însă, în fundul lor, pretutindeni și totdeauna sunt aceiași. Nu există pe pământ speță zoologică mai unitară decât a regelui creațiunii. Între un polinezian antropofag și cel mai rafinat european, altă deosebire hotărâtă nu există decât modul de a-și găti bucatele. Nici un neam de oameni nu-i mai bun sau mai rău, nici umil, mai inteligent ori mai prost; unul e mai așa, altul, mai aminterea; dar, la urma urmelor, toți sunt la fel. Zi-le oameni și dă-le pace! Așadar, să nu ne mai facem inimă rea și spaimă gândindu-ne că lumea românească ar fi mai stricată decât altele. Nu, hotărât; neamul acesta nu e un neam stricat; e numai nefăcut încă; nu e pân-acuma dospit cumsecade. E încă nelimpezit de mizeriile seculare sub care a mocnit cu junghietura frântă; încă nu crede în dreptate; încă nu poate scoate din sânu-i pe cine să-i poată comanda; încă nu știe de cine să asculte, fiindcă nu are deocamdată încredere în nimeni… Fript cu lapte, suflă și-n brânză. N-a ajuns să cumpănească bine ceea ce ar fi în stare să poată cu ceea ce i se pune împotrivă, și astfel, încă nu înțelege că în mâna lui ar sta să-și îndrepteze soarta și să dispună apoi pe de-ntregul de ea – precum e drept și precum să și fie odată. În fine, nu are încă destulă îndrăzneală să-și răfuiască socotelile cu „binevoitorii lui epitropi”. Dar, cu vremea, trebuie să vină și asta; trebuie să vină și înțelegerea fără de care nu poate fi o națiune sigură de avutul ei, nici de onoarea, nici viitorul ei. Românii sunt astăzi un neam întreg de peste zece milioane de suflete, având una și aceeași limbă (nu ca s-o lăudăm noi), extraordinar de frumoasă și de… grea; având un mod de gândire deosebit al lui, o comoară neprețuită de filosofie morală, de umor și de poezie – cu atât mai originală avuție cu cât este un amestec de moștenire și de dobândiri antice, grecești, slave, orientale și altele, pecetluie toate cu netăgăduit stăpân al lor. Din această stăpânire seculară a lui rezultă și puterea nebiruită de asimilare a acestui popor, ce încă d-abia pe departe începe a-și simți importanța în lumea europeană. Și de aceea este așa de greu de-nțeles teama ce o au unii de „înstrăinarea neamului românesc”, de „alterarea spiritului național”, de… „pierderea românismului”!… Să se piardă neamul românesc! Auzi dumneata!… Să se stingă normal, să se topească încet-încet în apa lumii și a veacurilor, cum s-au stins și s-au topit fel de fel de neamuri, chiar dintre cele mai mari și mai vestite de pe pământ – da!… findcă, firește, nimic din câte sunt la vederea omului ne e nemuritor în lumea asta și fiindcă tot ce e pe pământ trebuie neapărat să aibă o viață mai scurtă ca a pământului; căci încă și cu el, ca și cu toate ale lui, trebuie să se isprăvească odată… Decât pân-atunci mai va, mai avem de furcă, și mai va atâta și mai e aâta de tors, încât nu trebuie să ne doară de pe acuma capul de gândul zilelor din urmă a micuței noastre planete…, Ție-o poruncile înalte cât mai mult să plutească atârnată-n albastru între atâtea nenumărate lumini! …Dar să ne temem că are să se prăpădească, să se pairdă, așa, de azi pe mâine, până nici nu s-a ridicat încă bine-n picioare, un neam de zece milioane!… De ce?… Fiindcă un Fănică oarecare, sec, n-are destul respect pentru antemergătorii progresului nostru cultural?… fiindcă un muțunache, maimuțește apucăturile și tonul de boulevardier parisien?… fiindcă inteligențe tinere își risipesc zadarnic vremea în a critica în loc să și-o întrebuințeze în a face mai bine decât au făcut aceia pe care îi critică?… Tânăr, bătrân, face omul, individual, ce-i place și ce știe face… Ei și? Aici nu e vorba de ce-i place unuia și altuia să facă; e vorba de ce poate face o lume întreagă… Și lumea își vde-nainte de mersul ei, facă oricine ce-o pofti… Cine nu merge cu ea înainte și stă, cu gândul la sine – să-și facă în ceafă cărarea, să critice tot fără a face nimica, să țâfnească de necaz că alții au făcut ceva înainte-i ori că alții vor însemna ceva după dânsul – acela își crede ziua lui eternă; și mâine lumea o să fie departe de el înainte, și el o să se afle înapoi departe de ea. Ba, adesea, lumea trebuie să dea câțiva pași înapoi, ca să-și ia vânt spre a merge mai sigur înainte. Vai de cel ce n-a luat seama la mișcarea ei prudentă!… se va găsi rătăcit, că s-a bizuit a merge de capul lui înainte fără socoteală. Oamenii toți mor: unii, mai de timpuriu, alții, mai târzior… Da, toți mor; dar numai unii îmbătrânesc: aceia care nu simt că lumea merge și că omul nu trebuie să se-nțepenească-n călcâie pe loc, ci trebuie să se lase dus în pasul lumii. Pura întâmplare a făcut sa întâlnesc si eu acest articol al lui Eminescu, articol care m-a impresionat in acest august 2022, pentru actualitatea lui, impresionare care m-a determinat sa încerc pe un fel de... maculator, al meu, o simultana traducere n spaniola, engleza si rusa (in engleza si rusa doar prin traducere automatica (mecanica), plus o echipare a traducerii in limba spaniola cu foarte multe linkuri. Mi-ar fi plăcut sa pot face acest lucru aici in Wikisource, sau in Wikipedia, dar nu stăpânesc tehnica necesara pentru a face asta. De aceea încerc sa pun aici un link catre pagina mea, nădăjduind ca conținutul paginii mele web sa servească de suport, sau... macar de idee, cuiva care ar stăpâni tehnica necesara spre a completa cu hiperlinkuri textul de aici (din Wikisource) al acestui articol al lui Eminescu.
