AOC

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

AOC stands for Appellation d'Origine Controlée. It is a French name for a government office that looks at products to make sure that they are okay. The office checks to see that a product really came from where it said it came from, and also checks that the product was made in the way that it was supposed to be made.

AOCs are most often found in connection to:

  • Wine regions (Like Bordeaux Entre-Deux-Mers AOC)
  • Some ciders
  • Some cheeses (Like Gruyères cheese)
