[edit] AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)
AOL Instant Messenger is a service by America On-line, or AOL, which allows any of its members to download free software and instantly communicate (by typing) with any user currently online, or on the network which the software connects to. Many companies, small groups, and single persons create their own versions of the AIM software, resulting in Trillian, AIM+, and more. They often remove the advertisements present in the AIM main window, have a more attractive GUI (interface), and offer greater security. AIM is very popular, with millions of users, and has even led to the development of a sort of online shorthand of acronyms including LOL (Laughing Out Loud), BBL (Be Back Later), and ROFL (Rolling on the Floor Laughing), plus smileys such as :-) and ^_^.
