Hugh Capet (French: Hugues Capet) (circa 940 – October 24, 996) was King of France from 987 until his death in 996. He was born in Paris, France and was the son of Hugh the Great and Hedwige of Saxony. He married Adelaide of Aquitane. She was the daughter of William III of Aquitane. Capet was the first person of the direct Capetian Dynasty to rule France.

Capet is a nickname for "wearing a cape".

Hugh Capet is buried in the Saint Denis Basilica.
