Auckland
From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand. For a brief period in New Zealand's history it was the capital city; however that was moved to Wellington.
Auckland is known as the "City of Sails" due to its magnificent harbour and the nearby Hauraki Gulf which, being full of a variety of islands, provides interesting and safe anchorage and sailing.
Auckland is built on a series of dormant volcanos, the most recent being Rangitoto, an island just a few kilometres off the centre of the City, lush with pohutakawa, a native tree known as the New Zealand Christmas tree due to its brilliant red flowers blooming in December.
