The Republic of Azerbaijan is a country next to the Caspian Sea.

It shares a border with Russia in the north, Georgia, Armenia, in the west and Iran in the south. The Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic (an exclave of Azerbaijan) borders Armenia to the north and east, Iran to the south and west, and Turkey to the northwest.

It has been a member of the Council of Europe since 2001, so for this and other reasons it is sometimes considered part of Europe, but it is considered to be in South West Asia by the United Nations due to its geographic and cultural characteristics.
