[edit] Cities
Cities cats are in the cat of their Region/country/continent as well as the city cat one step up.
- Example - Category:Cities in New York
- Category:Cities in New York is in Category:New York and Category:Cities in the United States
- Category:Cities in the United States is in Category:United States and Category:Cities in North America
- Category:Cities in North America is in Category:North America and Category:Cities
[edit] People
Currently there are very few regional people categories, but the workup is similar to Cities.
- Example - Category:English people
- Category:English people is in Category:England and Category:British people
- Category:British people is in Category:Great Britain, Category:European people, and Category:people by nationality (duplicates the Continental groupings with all countries in the one cat)
- Category:European people is in Category:Europe and Category:People by continent.
[edit] Category tagging
If the correct category doesn't exist (and isn't likely to be needed any time soon for other articles - ie. people from Togo) the article should be cat'd to the lowest level that already exists. For a person from Togo that would be Asian people (People category, continent level) since there is not cat People from Togo (People cat, Country level)
If the category is likely to be needed (or hard to confirm it will not) it may be best to add the correct tag. If this is the case, the category should not be connected to the rest of the tree unless it has at least 3 articles/subcats in it first. If the article is already cat'd in the next level up, it should be left there until 3 or more articles can be all put into a subcat first.
- Cities in the United States has several states with only 1 or 2 cities. These cities should stay there until there are at least 3 of them. Once there are 3 then a new subcat for the state should be created, the 3 moved out of Cities/US and into the subcat and the subcat linked to Cities/US.
If a country has a category, the only Category on the country article should be its own Category. All other Categories should be on the country cat rather than the original article.
- The article United States should only have one category [[Category:United States| ]]
- Category:English-speaking countries should be on Category:United States not the article United States
