FLAC

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

FLAC (which stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec) is a way to encode audio files. It makes those audio files smaller, without affecting the perceived quality. Its use is similar to that of MP3. There is a difference though: Each time audio is encoded to MP3, some information is lost and cannot be recovered. With FLAC, no information is lost. On the other hand, MP3 flies can be much smaller than FLAC files. FLAC files can compress a audio file (in CD quality) by a factor of 2-3 only.
