Leeward Islands (Society Islands)
From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Leeward Islands are part of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. The northern group of the Lesser Antilles is in the West Indies. They extend from the Virgin Islands southeast to Guadeloupe. The Caribs were living on the islands when Christopher Columbus discovered them in 1493. Spain, France, and Great Britain fought over the islands in the 17th and 18th centuries.
