Contraction

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A contraction is a word used instead of two words to shorten them. For example, the contraction "can't" means "can not". An apostrophe takes the place of the letter that was. For example, an apostrophe goes in place of the o in not when "do not" is shortened to "don't".
