Latvia

Latvia is a country in Northern Europe. The capital is Rīga. It is one of the Baltic States, together with Estonia in the north and Lithuania in the south. Latvia's neighbours more eastwards are the countries Russia and Belarus. Latvia is partitioned into 4 historical regions: Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Zemgale, and Latgale.

Due to the decision of the EU summit on 13 December 2002 in Copenhagen, Latvia joined the European Union together with 9 other Southeast European countries on 1 May 2004.

On 20 September 2003 66.9% of the Latvians voted in favour of joining the European Union. Latvia is a NATO member since 29 March, 2004.
