Mac OS X is the name of the software that runs on computers made by Apple Inc. These are called Macintosh computers.

Mac OS X first came out in 2001, and is completely different than the Mac OS that it replaced. Mac OS X is like Unix but many people think it is prettier.

Mac OS X has a background in BSD. This is based (has common code with) AT&T Unix Versions 6 and 7.

The latest version of Mac OS X is called "Tiger" and is version 10.4.
