Dad's Army is British comedy television programme about the Home Guard during World War 2. It was by the BBC television service between 1968 and 1977. The story was about a group of men who volunteered to help defend their homes in the event of an invasion by the German army. It was written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft.
[edit] Plot
The story begins in the year 1940, during the Second World War. After the British Army is forced to leave Dunkirk in France after German forces won France, the British Prime Minister says on the radio that Britain needs to be defended. Captain Mainwaring, a pompous bank manager, hears his and decides to form a group of soldiers to help defend his seaside town of Walmington-on-Sea against the German army in an invasion.
Because young, fit men were sent to be in the British army fighting overseas, Mainwaring's volunteers were mainly older men, although they were all keen, and some, such as Mainwaring's chosen Lance Corporal Jones (third in command), were perhaps too keen at times.
[edit] Platoon members
- Captain Mainwaring, played by Arthur Lowe - in charge of the platoon.
- Sergeant Wilson, played by John Le Mesurier - second in charge. He is posher than the rest of the men and is very relaxed.
- Lance Corporal Jones, played by Clive Dunn - third in charge. He is very keen, and constantly wants to help Mainwaring, although his ideas often go wrong. He also gets very worried when a problem happens, and shouts "Don't Panic".
- Private Frazer, played by John Laurie. A normal soldier. He is a grumpy Scottish man, who often gets cross with Mainwaring.
- Private Godfrey, played by Arnold Ridley. A normal solder. He is a very nice, but very old man, who often needs to go to the toilet.
