This is the current layout for category:Continents and its sub cats. As it deals with people, countries and cities it is a vital category.

Contents

[edit] Basic Layout

  • Continents - the main category
    • Continent1 - each of the main continents plus Oceania is in this level, only one listed for showing the layout.
      • People of Continent1 (ie. Asian people)
      • Cities in the Continent (ie. Cities in Europe)
      • Countries on the continent (ie. African countries)
        • Country1 - see Continent1, but for countries on this continent
          • People of Country1 (ie. Chinese people)
          • Cities in the country (ie. Cities in Germany)
            • Major regions (ie. US states, Australian and Canadian provinces)
              • Cities in these regions (ie. Cities in New York)
        • Country2
          • Cities, people, major areas
    • Continent2
      • Countries, People, Cities

[edit] Cities

Cities cats are in the cat of their Region/country/continent as well as the city cat one step up.

Example - Category:Cities in New York

[edit] People

Currently there are very few regional people categories, but the workup is similar to Cities.

Example - Category:English people
Category:people by nationality and Category:People by continent are both in Category:People

[edit] Category tagging

If the correct category doesn't exist (and isn't likely to be needed any time soon for other articles - ie. people from Togo) the article should be cat'd to the lowest level that already exists. For a person from Togo that would be Asian people (People category, continent level) since there is not cat People from Togo (People cat, Country level)

If the category is likely to be needed (or hard to confirm it will not) it may be best to add the correct tag. If this is the case, the category should not be connected to the rest of the tree unless it has at least 3 articles/subcats in it first. If the article is already cat'd in the next level up, it should be left there until 3 or more articles can be all put into a subcat first.

  • Cities in the United States has several states with only 1 or 2 cities. These cities should stay there until there are at least 3 of them. Once there are 3 then a new subcat for the state should be created, the 3 moved out of Cities/US and into the subcat and the subcat linked to Cities/US.

If a country has a category, the only Category on the country article should be its own Category. All other Categories should be on the country cat rather than the original article.
