The words Romance and romantic usually mean:

  • something to do with love: “A dinner for two by candle-light by the side of a lake sounds very romantic.”
    • ”The word “romantic” (with a lower-case r) is often used to describe an unreal or sentimental feeling of love: “He has a romantic imagination”.
  • ”Romance” or “romantic” is often used to describe stories from the Middle Ages about love. Very often these stories are about love adventures of knights, or about the love of a poor man for a rich lady whom he could never hope to marry.

The Romantics were trying to do something different from the artists of the Classical Period in the 18th century.
