A warship is a ship carrying weapons, which is used by the navy. Some warships also carry aircraft.

Warships come in many different sizes. Here is a list of different kinds of warships, from the largest to the smallest of World War II:

  • Battleship - about 35,000 tons with 12" to 18" guns
  • Battlecruiser - about 25,000 tons with 10" to 12" guns
  • Cruiser -- 10,000 tons. Heavy cruiser had 8" guns or larger. Light cruiser had less than 8" guns.
  • Destroyer -- 2,000 tons with 4" to 6" guns.
  • Frigate -- 1,500 tons with 3" to 5" guns
  • Submarine -- 1,500 tons with torpedoes
  • Corvette, patrol craft, minesweeper, torpedo boats.

A submarine is a special kind of warship able to go under the sea.

An aircraft carrier is like an airport on a ship.

[edit] Today

All warships today have missiles and many have nuclear power. Battleships and battlecruisers are not used today.

  • Aircraft carriers, about 100,000 tons, carry a number of jets which can be launched from the ship.
  • Cruisers, 10,000 tons, are used against aircraft.
  • Destroyers, 9,000 tons, are used against submarines.
  • Frigates, 4,000 tons, are little destroyers.
  • Submarines, 7,000 tons, are used against ships and submarines.
  • Ballistic, 17,000 tons, are a new group of submarines that carry ballistic missiles that can be used against cities or other large targets that cannot move.simple:Warship
