The Bahamas are a group of islands in the West Indies. The country's capital, Nassau, is located on New Providence Island.

Popular belief holds it that Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas by landing on another of the islands, San Salvador.

The islands' mostly black population speaks English, the country's main language.

A popular vacation destination, the seven hundred islands and cays attract a large number of visitors from nearby America, Europe and elsewhere.
