Meow (said: "mee-YOWH" ) is a sound made by cats. Most cats that meow are small or kittens. Cats usually meow to express hunger or annoyance, or to ask for attention. Wild cats also meow, but not as much as domesticated cats do.

Many words that are animal sounds are onomatopoeias. This means they sound like what they are. Other animal onomatopoeias are:

  • woof
  • bow-wow
  • squeak
  • oink
  • moo
  • cheep
  • roar (alternative spelling rawr) <-- the word means "different version"
