Joseph Aloysius Lyons (15 September 18797 April 1939) was the tenth Prime Minister of Australia. He was Premier of Tasmania in the 1920s. He was from the Labor party. In 1931 he took his supporters and joined the other side. He started a new party called the United Australia Party. In January 1931 his new party won the elections. Lyons was the first Prime Minister to die while in office.
