[edit] History

The game first started in 2001 as Runescape (now referred to as RuneScape Classic), but the code and graphics engine was rewritten in 2004 to form Runescape 2, the game that is playable today from http://www.runescape.com/. The game is designed to allow players all over the world connect and play together in real-time. The game has around over 160,000 players on the game servers at any one time.

[edit] Features

The game is owned and operated by Jagex and it is free-to-play. Extra features in the game are only available to paid members. The game is managed on 138 servers across the globe. Each server can support a capacity of up to 2,000 users each.

[edit] Development

The game was originally made by Andrew Gower. He created a game named "DeviousMUD" in 1998. DeviousMud was mainly in 2D graphics and was scrapped to create RuneScape. RuneScape consists of both 2D isometric graphics and 3D graphics. However DeviousMud was never released to the public and only a few knew about it.

Jagex was soon formed. It stands for Java Gaming Experts. Andrew Gower is the head of development now. After RuneScape's popularity, they rewrote the script for the graphics engine and made a few alterations to the game. Runescape 2 was created.

[edit] Summary

The success of the game has changed the views on MMORPGs around the world. Runescape 2 is arguably one of the biggest MMORPG ever made - it has the a large number of members and the most servers.

[edit] Users

All of the characters are controlled by real people. Some players are non-playable characters (NPC) that can only be spoken to or killed if the storyline involves that character's death. A new player starts as level 3 in combat, with the maximum combat level for a player being 126. You can train with a lot of weapons and armor, but it's basic.

[edit] Membership

Becoming a member on Runescape 2 requires a $5 USD per month. Members get a larger and new area to play in, use extra member only skills, and have acess to member only weapons, tools, and armour.

[edit] Weapons, Armor, and Shields

Like most MMORPGs, RuneScape has weapons, armor and shields. These items are grouped by the material they contain: wooden (shield only), bronze, iron, steel, black, mithril, adamantite, rune, granite, dragon,(most expensive due to rarity), and barrows. All of these materials, except for dragon black and barrows, can be obtained by mining rocks that contain the ores. Players can then create items from these ores, such as weapons, shields and armor. There are many weapons in RuneScape have special abilities, such as the Abyssal Whip (The Abyssal Whip is byfar, the best weapon in the game), and all dragon weapons.the armour in the game is used to cover up your body and serves as protection from receiving damage from enemies. Shields are just like armor, but they do not cover the body. Instead, you have the wield the shield with your hand. Some swords in the game require two hands to use, so you will not be able to use a shield and the sword at the same time. However, most swords can be held with one hand, so a player is also able to hold a shield in the other hand.

[edit] PK

Player Killing (PK) means that you are in the wilderness (North of the world of Runescape) and you attack someone. If you attack someone first, you will be skulled. Being skulled means that you have a skull on your head. If you die while being skulled, you lose all of your items, important or not. Here is how you can make the skull go away: Once you attack, and have a skull on top, wait 20 minutes and it will go away unless you attack another player during the 20 minutes.
