Root (mathematics)

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The root of a number is the number that, when multiplied by itself a given number of times, yields another number. For example, the square root of 64 is 8, because 8 times 8 is 64.

[edit] Symbol

The origin of the radical symbol \sqrt{\,\,} is speculative, but many believe it comes from the letter r, the first letter of the Latin and German word radix which means the same mathematical operation.
