Popularity

Popularity is being either well-liked or common. The term's earliest use in English was during the 1400s in law and politics. It meant "low", "vulgar", and "of the common people".
A person is popular if they are well-liked. An idea or object is popular if it is common or preferred. An object can also be popular because it is well-liked.
Many different kinds of popularity exist, and there are many ways in which to get it. Popularity usually involves respect in two directions. the popular person is respected by others, and will show them respect. Amicability is an important part of popularity. A person who does not like others is not likely to be liked by others. Humor may also be a way of increasing a persons popularity.
In todays culture, being popular rarely has anything to do with respect. Popularity is often used to show how important someone is. The person may have no actual importance at all. If they are seen as popular, people believe they are important.
