Acronym

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An acronym is a word whose letters are the first letters of other words. People often create a short word that means the same thing as a much longer phrase (set of words), to make it faster and shorter to say the long phrase. Examples of acronyms are:

  • Laser - Light Amplified through Stimulated Emission of Radiation
  • Scuba - Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus
  • Snafu - Situation Normal: All Fouled Up
  • SARS - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
