[yɛlɛma] Letter to universities
Dear _____________, My name is Josh Borts. I am currently working for a non-profit organization called GeekCorps Mali. At the request of a student organization, we have started development of a Bambara language resources through the framework of Wikimedia ( http://www.wikimedia.org ). It is our hope that you will consider helping us with this project.
Computers are just arriving in Mali and it is important that online resources exist for the 12 million people that speak Bambara. As one of the few quality Bambara language programs in the world, we would would ask your help in the creating these new tools. We would appreciate the addition of any Bambara publications to WikiSource.org. It is our belief that the development of this new resource can be of great benefit to language programs such as yourselves. By adding to our publication library, dictionary and encyclopedia, we are offering the perfect community in which your students can practice their Bambara skills. As well, by developing these resources now, you are helping to build an education tool that is freely available to your own students.
Shortly, we will hold a competition at the University of Bamako to promote this idea. We will offer some mp3 players and maybe even a computer to the participants who enter the most articles in Wikipedia (bm.wikiedia.org). Rules can be found here http://bm.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Concours_de_lancement.
While the goal of this project is to develop online resource for Bambara speakers worldwide, we see this as only the start. It is our hope that your institution will be interested by this project and will one day consider the benefits of continuing our work with other African languages.
Sincerely,
Josh Borts GeekCorps Mali (http://mali.geekcorps.org) Technology Specialist Josh@mali.geekcorps.org
