  • Merkið - The Faroese Flag - Trawler Nýggjaberg
  • Stamp FR 195 of the Faroe Islands
  • Date of issue: 9 April 1990
  • Graphical art: Bárður Jákupsson
  • Description: The trawler Nýggjaberg was sunk on 28 March 1942 near to Iceland in the Second World War. 21 Faroese seamen lost their lifes. It was the worst single lost of the Faroes in the war. During the war, the British occupation forces reckognized Merkið, the Faroese Flag since 25 April 1940. This is a National Holiday (the Flag Day) on the Faroes since then. All boats had to hoist that flag and paint the name FAROES - FØROYA on there sides, for British Navy had to distinguish them as "friendly boats". This stamp highly symbolizes two items: The pride about the flag and the mourning about the lost of peaceful fishermen of a peaceful nation.
