In addition, it is a marquee event for WikiPortraits (wikiportraits.org), a volunteer-driven initiative to capture high-quality portrait photographs for use on Wikipedia. TIFF pushes our goal to increase the visual representation of notable figures and the Global South, especially those from underrepresented communities, on Wikipedia and its sister projects. In 2025, our team covered over 100 red carpets. With our team of 10 photographers, we were able to recruit a number of Toronto-based photogs to contribute to Wikipedia for the first time, as well as work with an experienced photographer we first worked at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. We’ve cultivated strong local talent in Toronto, thanks in part to recent media coverage in 404 Media and the BBC that boosted visibility and interest in the project. We also received interest from four photographers in Montreal after WikiPortraits got a shoutout from Depths of Wikipedia at a recent show there. We would like to bring at least one of them to help cover TIFF. Gabriel Hutchinson, a Toronto-based photographer who has covered TIFF in 2024 and 2025, will play a central role in organizing and assigning the local photographers in addition to shooting his own events. Our goal is to get 5-6 Canadian photographers, with at least two of them not based in Toronto. This aligns with the WMCA strategic goal of organizing local volunteers. ===WMCA Goals=== We believe this aligns with the following WMCA Strategic Goals: Increasing the number and diversity of contributors to all Wikimedia projects in Canada. WikiPortraits TIFF coverage is increasing the number of Canadian contributors to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Of the 7 Canadian photographers we recruited for 2025 TIFF, 6 were new to the Wikiverse through WikiPortraits and and 6 were people of color. Increase the visibility and reputation of Wikimedia Canada and its activities. WikiPortraits has proven highly press-worthy, generating international media coverage from outlets such as the BBC, Die Zeit, Radio France, and 404media—most of which reached out to us, unprompted. We haven’t yet been covered by Canadian outlets, but there is strong potential. Working in partnership with Wikimedia Canada, we could coordinate a targeted media outreach strategy. There’s a rich, distinctly Canadian angle to highlight: our coverage of TIFF; and extensive documentation of Canadian talent at Edinburgh. These narratives position WikiPortraits as both globally impactful and locally rooted, with Wikimedia Canada’s support front and center. Increase the diversity of free knowledge to all Wikimedia projects in Canada. WikiPortraits makes a meaningful contribution to equity and knowledge diversity by dramatically increasing the representation of underrepresented groups on Wikipedia and Wikidata. While biographies of women on English Wikipedia have only recently surpassed 20%, more than 40% of WikiPortraits subjects are women and over 30% are people of color. Notably, many of the off-red carpet shoots will be smaller TIFF films from the Global South. Additional capacity in organizing local photographers will allow us to have better coverage. ===WikiPortraits Background=== Wikipedia has been one of the ten most visited websites in the world, serving more than 2 billion users every month. Yet Wikipedia pages for public figures often lack high-quality photos due to licensing restrictions. Most press photos are under commercial copyright and cannot be used under Wikipedia’s free-content guidelines. WikiPortraits was created in early 2024 to address this gap by sending credentialed volunteer photographers to photograph notable individuals at film festivals, conferences, and other major events—including the Nobel Prize ceremonies, Eurovision, 2026 Winter Olympics, Cannes Film Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. More than 1 out of every 100 pageviews on Wikipedia now is illustrated by a WikiPortraits photo Our photos over 400 million image views per month. We are applying for press credentials for TIFF 2026 in order to continue this impactful work. Our goals this year include: * Capturing high-quality, freely-licensed portraits of notable individuals attending TIFF * Expanding representation of global cinema talent, including filmmakers and performers from low- and middle-income countries * Supporting local Toronto photographers by subsidizing meals and late-night transit during shoots == List of participants == Indicate here the list of participants that will incur expenses for this activity; you do not need to list all participants that will take part in the activity. In [:commons:Category:WikiPortraits at 2025 Toronto International Film Festival |2025]], our team covered over 100 red carpets. * Increase the visibility and reputation of Wikimedia Canada and its activities. * Increase the diversity of free knowledge to all Wikimedia projects in Canada. We are applying for press credentials for TIFF 2026 in order to continue this impactful work.
