::I totally understand your concerns, however global praxis is that blocks are meant to be preventative and not punitive. As someone who is in anti-vandalism corps for the sixth year now, I can share alot of experience with you. See, most of the vandalism is short-term based (think of bored schoolers who vandalise Wikipedia in their free time when on a break), but you also have long-term abusers (which are usually account based, you can block those indefinitely). However, IPs are different. Internet providers are constantly shifting IPs between their customers meaning your indefinite blocks actually do more harm than prevention (some even see it punitive, to say the least) as they block innocent potential editors in the future. My rationale and thought process is usually to escalate blocks: so for schoolers, a few hours is sufficient, for usual vandals, a few days, for more egregious a week/month, and the worst ones for a year (except proxies, which can be blocked for any duration, but not indefinite). Reblocking is far better than indefinite blocking for IPs. So I suggest we convert recent blocks to a week/month ones, and the older blocks are lifted. As a member of global sysops, I will closely patrol diqwiki and (re)raise blocks if needed. Would you agree to this proposal? ::I totally understand your concerns, however global praxis is that blocks are meant to be preventative and not punitive. As someone who is in anti-vandalism corps for the sixth year now, I can share alot of experience with you. See, most of the vandalism is short-term based (think of bored schoolers who vandalise Wikipedia in their free time when on a break), but you also have long-term abusers (which are usually account based, you can block those indefinitely). However, IPs are different. Internet providers are constantly shifting IPs between their customers meaning your indefinite blocks actually do more harm than prevention (some even see it punitive, to say the least) as they block innocent potential editors in the future. My rationale and thought process is usually to escalate blocks: so for schoolers, a few hours is sufficient, for usual vandals, a few days, for more egregious a week/month, and the worst ones for a year (except proxies, which can be blocked for any duration, but not indefinite). Reblocking is far better than indefinite blocking for IPs. So I suggest we convert recent blocks to a week/month ones, and the older blocks are lifted. As a member of global sysops, I will closely patrol diqwiki and (re)raise blocks if needed. Would you agree to this proposal? ::I totally understand your concerns, however global praxis is that blocks are meant to be preventative and not punitive. As someone who is in anti-vandalism corps for the sixth year now, I can share alot of experience with you. See, most of the vandalism is short-term based (think of bored schoolers who vandalise Wikipedia in their free time when on a break), but you also have long-term abusers (which are usually account based, you can block those indefinitely). However, IPs are different. Internet providers are constantly shifting IPs between their customers meaning your indefinite blocks actually do more harm than prevention (some even see it punitive, to say the least) as they block innocent potential editors in the future. My rationale and thought process is usually to escalate blocks: so for schoolers, a few hours is sufficient, for usual vandals, a few days, for more egregious a week/month, and the worst ones for a year (except proxies, which can be blocked for any duration, but not indefinite). Reblocking is far better than indefinite blocking for IPs. So I suggest we convert recent blocks to a week/month ones, and the older blocks are lifted. As a member of global sysops, I will closely patrol diqwiki and (re)raise blocks if needed. Would you agree to this proposal? ::I totally understand your concerns, however global praxis is that blocks are meant to be preventative and not punitive. As someone who is in anti-vandalism corps for the sixth year now, I can share alot of experience with you. See, most of the vandalism is short-term based (think of bored schoolers who vandalise Wikipedia in their free time when on a break), but you also have long-term abusers (which are usually account based, you can block those indefinitely). However, IPs are different. Internet providers are constantly shifting IPs between their customers meaning your indefinite blocks actually do more harm than prevention (some even see it punitive, to say the least) as they block innocent potential editors in the future. My rationale and thought process is usually to escalate blocks: so for schoolers, a few hours is sufficient, for usual vandals, a few days, for more egregious a week/month, and the worst ones for a year (except proxies, which can be blocked for any duration, but not indefinite). Reblocking is far better than indefinite blocking for IPs. So I suggest we convert recent blocks to a week/month ones, and the older blocks are lifted. As a member of global sysops, I will closely patrol diqwiki and (re)raise blocks if needed. Would you agree to this proposal? ::I totally understand your concerns, however global praxis is that blocks are meant to be preventative and not punitive. As someone who is in anti-vandalism corps for the sixth year now, I can share alot of experience with you. See, most of the vandalism is short-term based (think of bored schoolers who vandalise Wikipedia in their free time when on a break), but you also have long-term abusers (which are usually account based, you can block those indefinitely). However, IPs are different. Internet providers are constantly shifting IPs between their customers meaning your indefinite blocks actually do more harm than prevention (some even see it punitive, to say the least) as they block innocent potential editors in the future. My rationale and thought process is usually to escalate blocks: so for schoolers, a few hours is sufficient, for usual vandals, a few days, for more egregious a week/month, and the worst ones for a year (except proxies, which can be blocked for any duration, but not indefinite). Reblocking is far better than indefinite blocking for IPs. So I suggest we convert recent blocks to a week/month ones, and the older blocks are lifted. As a member of global sysops, I will closely patrol diqwiki and (re)raise blocks if needed. Would you agree to this proposal?
