Machado [[User:Vapmachado|Vapmachado]] ([[User talk:Vapmachado|talk]]) 04:15, 1 March 2011 (UTC) :Hello, :Thanks for your input. I have looked this situation over, and while I do not ''control'' this wiki any more than anyone else, I can tell you what my experience is in these kinds of situations: after more than ten years, Wikipedia and its sister projects have developed such a complex universe of opinions and policies that no-one can really be said to follow every guideline at any point. One editor may focus more on quality, and another on users' feelings. No-one, and both, are right. But since we need to co-exist here, we should each of us, take pains in understand the other one before we make drastic decisions. And I think that Sue concurs with me. :Let me rephrase it a little bit for clarity's sake: the first years Wikipedia existed, the goal was simply to have articles on every subject and people tried to get as many edits as they could. Then another phase came along, where most everybody was concerned with quality: they added more and more sources, and tried to get more scientists to contribute. Around 2009, the third phase started to grow, but it wasn't until 2011 that it has really come into full effect, and it is still not the dominant way of thinking, namely that we should focus on the users. After all, it's the users that create the content. We are right now in the process of [[:meta:Gender gap|trying to get more women to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects]], for instance, At the same time, there are users who have been present since the beginning, and we shouldn't ignore their needs and wants either. And the compromise here is very difficult - for everybody. Not just for the newcomers who come into a culture that is well-established and complex and yes, a little rough sometimes, but for the veterans, who have seen every attempt at change Wikipedia before, and who have had good results with their present methods. Sue (and I) represent those who have looked at the developments here, and [http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page try to see how Wikipedia should (and need to) evolve in the upcoming years]. :In conclusion, now that Mono has restored your user page and explained his/her reason for removing it in the first place, I trust that the situation has resolved itself, and that we all can get back to being productive both here and on other Wikimedia projects. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat. As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide [[mw:SUL finalisation|single-user login finalisation]] (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully. Why is this happening? As currently stated at [[m:Global rename policy|the global rename policy]], a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects. The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed. Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called [[m:Global renamers|Global renamers]]. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the [[m:SRGP|requests for global permissions]] page on 1 September, a week from now. In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to [[:m:SRUC|the request page for a global rename]]. Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier. If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the [[m:SUL|Help:Unified login]] page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for [[m:Talk:Global renamers|global renamers]]. You can also contact me on [[m:User talk:Keegan (WMF)|my talk page on meta]] if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities. Here's some stuff you can do: * [[Outreach team#Volunteers|Volunteer to join the outreach team]] so we know that we're allowed to ask you for help ;-) * [[Languages and skills|Indicate your languages and skills]] on [[Special:Mypage|your user page]] so we know ''how'' you can best help! * [[Bookshelf|Review the bookshelf materials]], help with [[Localization guidelines (Bookshelf)|localization]] and [[Talk:Bookshelf|add your feedback]] * [[GLAM|Learn about our work with cultural institutions]] and [[GLAM/Discussion|join ongoing conversations]] * [[Account Creation Improvement Project|Join the Account Creation Improvement Project]], aiming to increase editing by new users * [[Wikipedia student clubs|Start a student club]] at your university See the sidebar for some other projects you can get involved in. The [[Village pump]] is a great place to ask questions, but don't hesitate to leave me a note if I can help. Thanks for stopping by &ndash; hope you like the place and decide to stay! If you ask a crat you will most likely be granted sysop powers here cheers--[[User:Guerillero|<font color="green">Gue</font>]][[User talk:Guerillero|<font color="green">rillero</font>]] 18:10, 21 August 2011 (UTC) == Main_page/ar == Hi, Could you please see why after the protection was enforced that I (an administrator) cannot edit the page? I just wanted to leave a formal note as a follow-up to an e-mail that you might received many hours ago about the removal of your rights from this site. Per a admittedly [[Wikimedia:Village pump#Cleaning up user rights|very brief discussion on the Village pump]], multiple users supported cleaning up the list, both on and off the page. My goal of doing this was to get a better count of who was an active administrator, as well as purge the list in a move that is in line with other WMF wikis. However, should you still wish to be an administrator on Outreach, please leave me a message on my talk page, and I will promptly restore your rights as soon as I see the message. Two were totally my translation and editing, and one was done in collaboration from two other translators and my editing. And also contributes in the translation of (File:Licensing tutorial ar.svg). I would definitely like to contribute, the problem is that I am a full-time and part-time translator and interpreter. So my contributions are not steady. I have used before - and still - DotSUB.com to translate Jimmy Wales' video and since then I used it for other translations, but I may consider this website for future use. Newsletter improvements == We are pleased to announce some improvements to our monthly community-led newsletter, [[Education/News|This Month In Education]], including a [[meta:Global_message_delivery/Targets/This_Month_in_Education|subscribe by email]] option and a [[Education/Newsletter/May_2014/Single|single-page edition]]. This work, we are happy to report that has led to several new subscriptions as well as a significant increase in pageviews per issue (see graphs below). Thanks to [[User:Thelmadatter|Leigh Thelmadatter]] for her continued dedication to this important work. And thanks to our education community for your ongoing contributions of updates, news and stories. Well done with a design that works well for a really full issue.--[[User:Sage (Wiki Ed)|Sage (Wiki Ed)]] ([[User talk:Sage (Wiki Ed)|talk]]) 13:55, 17 June 2014 (UTC) :Thanks, [[User:Sage (Wiki Ed)|Sage]]! :) I knew we needed to shorten this issue, and I thought of the "read more" feature that's used on the WM blog, but I wasn't sure how to do it. [[:it:Utente:Elitre|User:Elitre]] suggested the Signpost-style snippets, and it was exactly what I wanted to try. GLAM had already ported the template to Outreach wiki, so I copied it and tweaked it and think it looks pretty good! I'm glad you agree and I appreciate you saying so. :) It means a lot, and, honestly, it kinda made my day. :) [[User:AKoval (WMF)|Anna Koval (WMF)]] ([[user talk:AKoval (WMF)|talk]]) 22:18, 17 June 2014 (UTC) == VisualEditor == I wonder if a short article about VisualEditor would be interesting and useful to your readers? People who like it say that it lets them focus more on the writing and less on figuring out the right wikitext code, so it seems like an education-related editor might want to consider it. I'm not sure that everyone would want to use it, because learning wikitext markup might be the goal of some programs, and it does work better on faster computers. What do you think? [[User:Whatamidoing (WMF)|Whatamidoing (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF)|talk]]) 19:10, 23 June 2014 (UTC) :Hi [[User:Whatamidoing (WMF)|Whatamidoing (WMF)]]! :) Thanks for stopping by and offering to share some news with the education community. A short article about VisualEditor seems like a good idea, and a timely one since [[User:Jdforrester (WMF)|James Forrester]] is enabling it here on Outreach wiki later today (see: [[Wikimedia:Village_pump#Enabling_an_opt-in_preference_for_VisualEditor_on_Outreach_wiki|Village pump]]). Teachers and students were the very audience I had in mind when I originally asked about it being a beta feature. You're right, not all will want to use it, but those who do soon can. If your story were to focus on educational applications, highlight the most useful functionality, include screenshots and links to help, and interview a teacher and a student who are active users of VisualEditor, that would really inform our readers. Pinging [[User:Thelmadatter]] to see if she agrees. [[User:AKoval (WMF)|Anna Koval (WMF)]] ([[user talk:AKoval (WMF)|talk]]) 16:01, 24 June 2014 (UTC) ::I'm not sure that "a short article" can contain all of that, but I'm willing to give it a try. It would be useful to know how much of your program involves peoplew writing in non-Latin languages (especially right-to-left scripts like Hebrew or Arabic). The first step here will be turning it on, and that requires a decision about turning on the language feature. [[User:Whatamidoing (WMF)|Whatamidoing (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF)|talk]]) 05:22, 25 June 2014 (UTC) :::Well, "short" was your word, not mine. ;) Fortunately, there's no word limit on newsletter articles, so it's not an issue. :) :::VisualEditor has been turned on today as an opt-in beta feature by [[User:Jdforrester (WMF)|James Forrester]] ([[Wikimedia:Village_pump#Enabling_an_opt-in_preference_for_VisualEditor_on_Outreach_wiki|see discussion on Village Pump]]). :::Your question about non-Latin languages is a good one. There are around [[Education/Countries|60 countries]] that we know of doing educational outreach on-wiki and there may be more Wikimedia communities that wish to get involved, too. Arabic and Hebrew are, in fact, two languages we work with. And we have a number of other languages with complex [[w:Input_method_editor|IMEs]]: Armenian, Bengali, Nepali, and others. :::Really glad to have your eyes on this, [[User:Whatamidoing (WMF)|Whatamidoing (WMF)]]. And looking forward to your article. [[User:AKoval (WMF)|Anna Koval (WMF)]] ([[user talk:AKoval (WMF)|talk]]) 06:02, 25 June 2014 (UTC) == Newsletter improvements, June 2014 issue == We are pleased to announce additional improvements to our monthly community-led newsletter, [[Education/News|This Month In Education]]. The most visible change is the [[w:Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost|Signpost]]-style article teasers, featured on the main page of the newsletter and in a new [[Education/Newsletter/June_2014/Highlights|highlights edition]]. Since our newsletter is published once it month, it can be quite long. The goal here was to share the main ideas without overwhelming the readers. The other major change is a new way to submit articles, called [[Education/Newsletter/Newsroom/Bullet_points|the Bullet points page]]. Here community members can provide basic information about their news and newsletter volunteers will write a brief article for them. The intention is to make it easier for everyone to contribute even if they have concerns about their English skills or their writing skills. We are happy to report the results of these improvements. There are new subscriptions, another significant increase in pageviews (see graphs at right), and more submissions than any issue yet. The [[Education/Newsletter/June_2014/Highlights|June 2014 issue]] featured 21 articles from 13 programs from around the world. This Month In Education is reaching more people and speaking for more programs than ever before, and we think that's a really good thing! :) Many thanks to [[User:Thelmadatter|Leigh Thelmadatter]]. Every month, she pings people on-wiki and nudges people on-list, and as a result, the newsletter always has stories to share. Her ongoing commitment to this important work is very much appreciated! And many thanks to our education community for always sharing your news. The first step here will be turning it on, and that requires a decision about turning on the language feature. If omitted then the English version of the current page is used. This parameter can normally be omitted, as it is only required if you want to link to a page other than the one you place the template on, which is very uncommon. If this parameter is used on a sub-page make sure you supply the root name, not the full page name (e.g. on [[MediaWiki/fr]] you would need to use <code><nowiki>{{Languages|MediaWiki}}</nowiki></code> and not <code><nowiki>{{Languages|MediaWiki/fr}}</nowiki></code>). == Usage == The template should only be placed on pages that exist in more than one language, and it should be placed in the same location on each translation of the page. The English version of a page is always the main version, with all other languages as sub-pages, named using the appropriate language code (see below). For example, on the Main Page you would include the text <code><nowiki>{{Languages}}</nowiki></code>, both on [[Main Page]] itself, and on each of its language sub-pages. The template automatically creates links to any language sub-pages that exist, e.g. <tt>Main Page/ja</tt>, <tt>Main Page/fr</tt>, and ignores non-existant languages. See [[m:Meta:Translate extension]] for further details about translating pages. == Supported languages == [[Special:SiteMatrix]] shows you the code and name of each supported language. Other languages may be added easily to the template as necessary. '''If no Wikimedia project in your language exists, do not add pages in that language to Meta-Wiki!''' == Example == See [[Wikimedia maintenance notice]]. ba0rh12dzf4po98qgay9ygcntobp6x7 GLAM/Newsletter/April 2024/Contents/Czech Republic report 0 67559 276581 261689 2026-06-03T07:43:14Z 解浪 57622 Fix lint errors 276581 wikitext text/x-wiki <noinclude>{{:GLAM/Newsletter/April 2024/Header}}</noinclude> {{GLAM/Newsletter/Title|2023 became a promising year for wiki-residents and partnerships in CR|By [[User:Pavel Bednařík (WMCZ)|Pavel Bednařík]]}} === The year 2023 through the eyes of the main wiki-resident === <gallery mode="packed-hover" heights="100px"> File:03_K_mestu_ceskych_kralobven_2021.jpg|[[:en:Museum of Eastern Bohemia|museum Exposition]] File:Doc._Mgr._Petr_Grulich,_Ph.D._archiv_MVČ.jpg|[[:cs:Petr Grulich (historik)|Museum Director Petr Grulich]] File:Gayerova_kasárna_MVČ_1473.jpg|New building restored from old Gayerova kasárna building File:Gayerova_kasárna_MVČ_1471.jpg|Statue in front of the restored building File:KU_11-00187.jpg|Painter Antonín Hudeček and museum director František Tichý in 1932 </gallery> Lukáš Nekolný, main wiki-resident of [[:cs:Wikimedia ČR|Wikimedia CR]] as well as associate wiki-resident in the Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové published an '''[https://www.wikimedia.cz/en/2024/04/08/the-year-2023-from-the-point-of-view-of-the-main-wiki-resident/ article]''' resuming breaking year 2023 in his report. From the very beginning, the project with the museum is an opportunity for us to experiment and look for new methods of implementing GLAM employees in cooperation, in order to build awareness of how Wikimedia projects work and to develop involvement of employees of cultural institutions right away. Each successive GLAM-Wiki training is an opportunity for us to learn lessons and gradually implement changes. This time we came up with the '''idea of splitting the training into an online and a in-person part'''. During the online training, Kamila not only talks about the principles of GLAM-Wiki collaboration, but gives GLAM employees specific tools and tips on how they can examine the presence of their collections in Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia, in order to engage in the planning stage of specific collaborative activities. In this part of the training, museum's professionals are also tasked, after self-assessing the quality of content about museum collections, to select a topic to edit in the live training. In this way, between the online training and the live training, we can encourage employees to work on their own, and at the live training we can already focus on practical work and editing specific articles based on sources independently prepared by the trainees. Based on our previous experience, we also know that engaging employees in editing on Wikipedia is a challenge. Therefore, from the very beginning of our cooperation, we have been trying to show that this involvement can take different forms and does not mean only writing or developing Wikipedia. '''The range of activities offered by Wikimedia projects in GLAM-Wiki collaborations is so wide''' that everyone will find an area of interest that is relevant to their ability to get involved. === The 9th GLAM-Wiki European Coordinators online meet-up === <gallery mode="packed-hover" heights="100px"> File:GLAMWIKICSI-basiclogo-2024.webp|GLAMWIKICSI-basiclogo File:Wikimania 2024 logo (wiki old).png|Wikimania 2024 logo File:WikiCoversEvents-logo-v1.png|WikiCoversEvents-logo </gallery> The next, the ninth, meeting of European GLAM Wiki coordinators was held in early April. They cooperated in developing educational and promotional materials, as well as developing the new GLAM-Wiki website. They helped develop a comprehensive GLAM-Wiki project evaluation system and create evaluation surveys. Additionally, they provided administrative support, including preparing various reports and analyses, and supported the Open Culture Manager in ongoing tasks. Launched in January 2023, this initiative aims to digitize and make accessible the rich cultural heritage of Meghalaya's Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities. By collaborating with local organizations like the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Sohra, Jeebon Roy Memorial Trust Library in Shillong and Vintage Museum in Sohra, the project seeks to ensure that valuable cultural resources—such as manuscripts, books, and audio files—are freely available on Wikimedia platforms. [[File:Wikimedia skill training session at Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Shillong2.jpg|thumb|left|Wikimedia skill training session at Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Shillong]] In an era characterized by rampant misinformation, this project becomes particularly relevant. It aims to produce verifiable and reliable reference materials that enhance the quality of online content. The Wikimedia movement envisions a world where everyone has free access to the sum of all human knowledge. Through projects like Wikipedia, Wikisource, and Wikimedia Commons, it has fostered a global community of volunteers dedicated to this vision. This initiative not only aligns with that mission but also strengthens partnerships with local institutions to document tribal culture accurately. As of September 2024, approximately 20,000 pages have been digitized, with 5,426 pages (41 books) uploaded onto Wikimedia Commons. Out of these 28 rare books are in Khasi language. A total of 337 photos and 25 videos have been documented and shared online. Skill training has been provided to 24 volunteers, enhancing local capacity for ongoing cultural documentation. In her presentation, titled '''"Experiment, Fail, Learn: Innovative Strategies for Engaging Partner’s Staff in Wikipedia Editing"''' she emphasized that engaging cultural sector staff, despite many barriers (such as lack of time and numerous projects), brings significant benefits. The goal of the presentation was to inspire CEE Meeting participants to develop effective, practical strategies for involving GLAM staff in Wikipedia editing. Kamila Neuman's second presentation at the CEE Meeting 2024, titled '''"Effective GLAM-Wiki Partnerships: Learning from Others' Mistakes with Limited Resources,"''' focused on building successful partnerships even with limited resources by drawing on existing knowledge and the experiences of others. Kamila emphasized that we don't need to "reinvent the wheel" when creating GLAM-Wiki partnerships. Instead, we can benefit from the wealth of experience accumulated within the Wikimedia movement. One of the biggest challenges, however, is navigating the vast amount of available knowledge and best practices. In this context, Kamila shared her most valuable information sources, which have proven useful in her own work. She highlighted the importance of finding relevant materials and adapting them to individual needs. She also encouraged active participation in international meetings, where knowledge and experiences can be exchanged, and support from others can be sought. Sharing one's own insights can help in building better, more effective GLAM-Wiki partnerships. The event brought together coordinators from across Europe to exchange experiences and ideas for advancing GLAM-Wiki collaborations. The workshop aimed to explore ways to scale GLAM-Wiki partnerships by strengthening the role of Wikipedians in Residence (WiR). Participants worked in groups to analyze barriers and opportunities for expanding WiR programs and brainstorm strategies for engaging Wikipedians in Residence. Discussions centered on how WiR programs can support more effective and sustainable collaborations with GLAM institutions while increasing the number of active residents. Although the limited time of the workshop prevented concrete solutions from being developed, it facilitated meaningful discussions and enhanced knowledge sharing. Participants openly exchanged experiences, sharing both successes and challenges, and reflected on future initiatives. The workshop underscored the potential of such meet-ups as platforms for building collective strategies and mutual support within the GLAM-Wiki community. ===First In-Person Meeting of Wikipedians in Residence, November 14–15, 2024=== [[File:WiRs meetup 14-15.11.2024 5 Kamila Neuman Wioletta Matusiak Agata Stadnicka Grzegorz Gogacz Wojciech Szczesny.jpg|thumb|WiRs meetup 14-15.11.2024]] [[File:WiRs meetup 14-15.11.2024 3.jpg|thumb|A visit to the Józef Chełmoński exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw]] On November 14–15, 2024, a meeting of Wikipedians in Residence took place at the Wikimedia Polska office in Warsaw. Representing Wikimedia Polska were Kamila Neuman, Open Culture Manager, and Wioletta Matusiak, Education and Development Manager, who facilitated the meeting. This was the first in-person meeting of the year, providing an opportunity to discuss ongoing activities, exchange experiences, and strengthen collaboration. Until now, Wikipedians in Residence have only met online – a total of ten virtual meetings have been held. This in-person gathering allowed participants to get to know each other better, gain a deeper understanding of their work, and discuss future initiatives together. These were two very intensive days, during which we also had the chance to learn about Wojciech Szczęsny's workflow. Wojciech presented tools he developed to optimize and accelerate editing activities within Wikimedia projects, which proved both inspiring and practical for all participants. During the meeting, there was also time for integration aligned with our common interests – participants visited the [[:en:Jozef Chełmonski|Józef Chełmoński]] exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw. This was a particularly valuable experience, as in 2025, we plan activities related to exhibitions dedicated to Chełmoński at [[:en:National Museum in Poznan|National Museum in Poznań]] and Krakow. The meeting also resulted in a concrete action – by the end of November, we collaboratively prepared and submitted an application for a mobility grant to Italy, with Wikimedia Italy as the project partner. Through this initiative, we aim to learn about the functioning of GLAM-Wiki projects in Italy and visit local GLAM institutions to better understand their collaboration models. This is an example of how in-person meetings can lead to specific initiatives that contribute to the development of our GLAM-Wiki projects. === High-Quality Portraits of Polish Monarchs on Wikipedia: Digital Treasures from POLONA === <gallery mode="packed-hover" heights="100"> File:Dobrawa (274945).jpg|Dobrawa File:Boleslaw I Chrobry (274954).jpg|Boleslaw I Chrobry File:Mieszko I (274939) (cropped).jpg|Mieszko I File:Jan III Sobieski (275311).jpg|Jan III Sobieski File:Anna Jagiellonka (275264).jpg|Anna Jagiellonka </gallery> The Kings and Dukes of Poland by [[:en:Jan Matejko|Jan Matejko]] is one of the most renowned works depicting Polish rulers. Particularly popular are the portraits of monarchs from the Piast dynasty, whose original likenesses have not survived. For many Poles, figures such as Mieszko I or Bolesław Chrobry are almost synonymous with Matejko’s illustrations. Until recently, the scans of Matejko's drawings used on Wikipedia were of low quality – both in resolution and color fidelity, which often diverged from the original. Wojtek Szczęsny, serving as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Library, undertook efforts to enhance these materials: *He acquired high-quality scans from the first book edition of The Kings and Dukes of Poland from around 1893, available in the Polona digital library. *He enriched the collection with colored versions of the portraits created by Leonard Stroynowski and Zygmunt Papieski, sourced from postcards dating back to the interwar period. Thanks to Wojtek Szczęsny's efforts: *High-quality scans have replaced the previous images not only on the Polish Wikipedia but also across 86 language versions of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. *The portraits of Polish rulers are now used in approximately 2,700 locations on 1,600 pages. *Every month, these 80 scans of monarch portraits receive about 2.7 million views, allowing Wikipedia users worldwide to access faithful reproductions of Polish rulers' portraits. Lists of Polish kings and dukes, as well as biographies of rulers, are present even in less popular language versions of Wikipedia. This highlights the importance of providing top-quality content that not only promotes Polish culture and history but also enriches global knowledge about our heritage. The TAROCH coalition seeks to create and adopt a Declaration on Open Access to Cultural Heritage, which will be open for endorsement by civil society organizations and institutions. At the same time, a strategy will be implemented to globally promote the recognition of open access. These efforts will lay the foundation for a comprehensive campaign to establish and adopt an official UNESCO standard on open access to cultural heritage by 2029. The District Council have agreed to make available a sizeable library of professional tourism photography under an open licence, and the museum will be arranging the upload of a large collection of out-of-copyright historical photos, as well as helping clear the copyright of some local-history books for Wikisource. <gallery mode="packed" caption="MacDiarmid Institute staff and researchers at the Auckland symposium photo shoot"> File:Pauline Harris 20251127 MacDiarmid Institute 047.jpg|Pauline Harris File:Geoff Willmott 20251127 MacDiarmid Institute 090.jpg|Geoff Wilmott File:Jackson Miller 20251127 MacDiarmid Institute 060.jpg|Jackson Miller File:Erin Leitao 20251127 MacDiarmid Institute 053.jpg|Erin Leitao File:Shanghai Wei 20251127 MacDiarmid Institute 081.jpg|Shanghai Wei File:Vanessa Young 20251127 MacDiarmid Institute 105.jpg|Vanessa Young File:Volker Nock 20251127 MacDiarmid Institute 067.jpg|Volker Nock </gallery> An ongoing project with the '''[[w:MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology|MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology]]''' has been focussed on creating good Wikidata profiles and open-licensed photos of the main researchers. He then organised a photo-shoot of PhD students, while the event photographer shot dozens of portraits of researchers, and both image collections were uploaded to Commons. The Institute is supplying numerous other photos from its image library under an open licence. The next stage of the project will be inviting selected researchers to give feedback on Wikipedia articles on their field of study, pointing out gaps on the Talk page and supplying up-to-date references. The coverage of New Zealand archaeology in Wikipedia and Commons is extremely poor; much of the project will be an education campaign for the archaeology community, ending with a presentation or workshop at the national Archaeology Association conference in June. There is a large "grey literature" of archaeology reports that are difficult to find and cite, numerous photo collections under All Rights Reserved copyright, and almost no citation of the key works of New Zealand archaeology in Wikipedia. Giantflightlessbirds will be improving a series of articles on the leading lights of Aotearoa archaeology as a demonstration, but will also be working with a selection of early-career researchers to show them the importance on ORCID, Wikidata, open-access publication, and making photographic documentation of excavations available in Commons. He'll also be showing how photos of artifacts like pottery or tin cans can be put in front of the wider audience that read Wikipedia but not archaeological journals. <br> <noinclude>{{GLAM/Newsletter/Comments|month=January 2026|December 2025|February 2026}}</noinclude> rtjk4v7kx67vs5w5wpp8ur4m0wvf4e9 Archive of Archives 0 72482 276556 276472 2026-06-02T15:11:26Z Pharos 84 add participant section 276556 wikitext text/x-wiki '''WikiProject Archive of Archives''' is an index to topics covered in participating archival collections, including both institutional and [[w:community archives|community archives]]. The training was led by [[:pl:User:Cyfrowabiblioteka|Grzegorz Gogacz]], Wikimedian-in-Residence at the [[:en:Warsaw Public Library – Central Library of the Masovian Voivodeship|Warsaw Public Library]], who shared his experience in categorizing and reusing complex image collections on Commons. In February, we are planning a follow-up online working session focused on jointly exploring and practically using the Museum of Photography’s collection on Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. The global GLAM-Wiki community is warmly encouraged to explore, reuse, and creatively build upon the Museum of Photography in Kraków’s photographic collection on Wikimedia Commons, available in the category: [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Media_contributed_by_the_Museum_of_Photography_in_Krakow Media contributed by the Museum of Photography in Krakow]. <br> <noinclude>{{GLAM/Newsletter/Comments|month=January 2026|December 2025|February 2026}}</noinclude> 2a5xo6qpe012m8woftwqt9y7yshlav9 GLAM/Newsletter/March 2026/Contents/Aruba report 0 72594 276590 276200 2026-06-03T07:51:28Z 解浪 57622 Fix lint errors 276590 wikitext text/x-wiki <noinclude>{{:GLAM/Newsletter/March 2026/Header}}</noinclude> {{GLAM/Newsletter/Title|Celebrating 20 Years of Papiamentu/o Wikipedia|By [[User:Ginelly.Q|Ginelly.Q]]}} [[File:Festive banner 20 years of PAP-Wikipedia.png|800px|frameless|center]] March marked a significant milestone for the Wikimedia movement in '''Aruba''' and the wider Caribbean: '''the 20th anniversary of Papiamentu/o Wikipedia''', officially celebrated on 26 March 2026. The [[m:Free Knowledge Africa|Free Knowledge Africa]]'s Commons Upload campaign brought together 51 volunteers who supported our belief that African heritage belongs on the world stage, freely accessible to researchers, educators and curious minds everywhere. This Campaign was painstaking, but purposeful, as we carefully cropped out individual images from previously digitised Nigerian newspapers and uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons as standalone files. This campaign resulted in over [[commons:Category:PD_Nigeria_-_Images|2,000 new images]] now part of the global open knowledge commons. Some of the Interesting images found within the pages of these historical newspapers <gallery mode=packed heights=150px> File:1954 ADVERTISEMENT ON MENTHOLATUM.png|A 1954 Advertisement of Mentholatum File:Advertisement for Broadway chemists.png|An Advertisement for Broadway Chemist File:A 1948 Advertisement of Cinemas.jpg|A 1948 Cinema schedule File:A 1948 badge of competition for Nigerian Youth Movement.png|A 1948 Badge Competition for the Nigerian Youth Movement </gallery> These illustrations give us a peek into the everyday life of the average Nigerian in the 1950s. This campaign also underscores that digitisation alone does not make cultural heritage discoverable. Historical illustrations and images buried inside these newspaper scans remain invisible to anyone who isn't already looking for them. By extracting these images, we have transformed raw digitised data into usable, shareable stories and resources, increasing the visibility of these visual heritage on Wikimedia platforms. <br> <noinclude>{{GLAM/Newsletter/Comments|month=April 2026|October 2025}}</noinclude> kefmeb7pqqrs7zr3whaqj8ns391tkwe GLAM/Newsletter/May 2026/Contents/Macedonia report 0 72683 276596 2026-06-03T11:56:26Z Velkovski.b 51311 Created page with "<noinclude>{{:GLAM/Newsletter/{{subst::GLAM/Newsletter/Newsroom/Next}}/Header}}</noinclude> {{GLAM/Newsletter/Title| Wikimedia MKD Shares GLAM Experience at International Conferences |By [[User:{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}|]]}} During the past period, Wikimedia MKD continued to actively promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences in the field of GLAM cooperation at the international level. Through participation in two important Wikimedia conferences, representatives of the organization presented successful practices, projects, and partnerships developed with cultural institutions in Macedonia. These presentations provided an opportunity to showcase the achievements of Wikimedia MKD, strengthen international cooperation, and contribute to discussions on the future development of GLAM initiatives within the Wikimedia movement. ==Wikilive 2026== From 16 to 17 May 2026, the jubilee tenth edition of the regional [[:sr:Википедија:Викилајв 2026| WikiLive conference]] was held in Belgrade, gathering members of Wikimedia communities, representatives of Wikimedia organizations, editors, and supporters of free knowledge from across the region. The conference program included lectures, workshops, and discussions dedicated to the future of Wikipedia, artificial intelligence, educational programs, and GLAM activities. Wikimedia MKD was represented by Orce Nineski, Coordinator for Cooperation with Cultural Institutions, who presented the organization’s GLAM activities and collaborations with museums, libraries, archives, and other cultural institutions in Macedonia. During his presentation, he highlighted the importance of digitization and free access to cultural heritage, emphasizing how cooperation between Wikimedia MKD and cultural institutions contributes to preserving and promoting Macedonian culture through free knowledge platforms. Nineski also presented several successful projects and activities through which photographs, documents, and various historical and cultural materials were uploaded to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. These activities help make Macedonian cultural heritage more accessible both to the local public and to the international Wikimedia community. His presentation attracted interest among participants, especially because of the practical examples of successful institutional partnerships and the opportunities for developing new regional GLAM collaborations in the future.
