Italy’s musical heritage is preserved in libraries, archives, conservatories and cultural institutions across the country. Opera librettos, historical scores, illustrated books and archival collections document centuries of musical production and the cultural networks that shaped it.
Yet much of this material remains accessible only to those who can visit the institutions that hold it. ''Note condivise'' (“Shared Notes”), a Wikimedia Italia project supported by the Waldensian Church, aims to make a selection of these collections available online as open, reusable digital resources.
The project brings together four institutions from different parts of Italy: Teatro Regio di Torino, the Associazione Musicale Estense in Modena, the “Luigi Boccherini” Conservatory in Lucca, and the “Alessandro Scarlatti” Conservatory in Palermo.
Each institution will contribute a different part of Italy’s musical heritage. Teatro Regio will make a selection of opera librettos from its historical archive available for digitization. The Associazione Musicale Estense will contribute rare illustrated volumes dating from the 16th to the 18th century, including works featuring engravings and woodcuts of particular historical and artistic interest. The “Luigi Boccherini” Conservatory will contribute materials from its historical collections, including sacred and early music collections and materials relating to major figures such as Giacomo Puccini and Alfredo Catalani. In Palermo, the “Alessandro Scarlatti” Conservatory will contribute materials from the Florio collection, documents relating to Sicilian musical production between early 19th and early 20th centuries, and an important corpus of traditional music from Sicily.
Wikimedia Italia will coordinate the project and support the institutions with digitization, metadata creation and publication on Wikimedia projects. The project will also include activities aimed at encouraging community participation and the reuse of the materials, including editathons and initiatives involving schools, universities, cultural institutions and music enthusiasts.
''Note condivise'' builds on Wikimedia Italia’s experience with Italian musical and cultural institutions, including collaborations with the Archivio Storico Ricordi, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Regio di Torino and the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia. These projects have contributed to developing expertise in digitization, metadata and the open publication of cultural collections, while demonstrating the potential of Wikimedia platforms as a shared infrastructure for cultural heritage.
