Can I trust Wikipedia?
Many of us will have encountered the view that information on Wikipedia can’t be trusted, because anyone can edit it. As Wikimedians, we know that the fact anyone can edit it is what makes Wikipedia trustworthy, thanks to thousands of dedicated volunteers. We also know that not all Wikipedia articles are created equal, but to readers, the features of an article that either increase or decrease trust are not as well known.
After repeatedly coming across this view in her work, Dr. Tamsin Braisher, Wikimedian in Residence at the University of Otago in Aotearoa New Zealand, developed a hands-on learning tool called 'Can I trust Wikipedia?'
Tamsin’s role as a Wikimedian in Residence acts as a bridge between academic researchers, staff, students, and the wider open-knowledge community. Through engaging with university students, Tamsin noticed a common misconception that many had heard from their school teachers: because anyone can edit Wikipedia, it cannot be trusted at all.
The set of cards is designed with the aim of shifting this view that "anyone can edit Wikipedia so I can't trust it" to "anyone can edit Wikipedia but I can still trust it." Through a card-sorting activity, players look at various features of Wikipedia articles—such as the sources of citations, edit histories, or grammatical errors—and sort them based on whether they increase or decrease their trust in the content.
There’s no way to win or lose the game. Instead, the goal is for it to serve as a prompt for discussion and critical thinking. For many features, whether or not they increase trust depends on context. For example, a small typo might suggest a page lacks recent peer review, or it might indicate that a human wrote it rather than an AI generator. If that increases or decreases trust is up to the evaluation of the player.
Originally created as a physical card sorting game for training sessions, when the global Wikimedia community came together for Wikimania 2027, Nyo Dekens, an editor from Belgium, helped turn it into an online activity.

What a great month again in the GLAM community!
As in previous months, the Global GLAM Call on 22 September had a number of very interesting presentations and discussion topics. Susanna hosted a small panel with two colleagues from the open movement: Renata Avila from the Open Knowledge Foundation and Alek Tarkowski from Open Future.
The agenda, recording and notes are all on the Meta Wiki Event Page.
Get involved
You're always welcome to propose topics for the call. Discussions, presentations and any other format are all welcome,
more info on Meta.
This year, people from all across the movement have hosted calls, and you can volunteer to host one too.
A big thank you to this year's hosts so far: Jael, Rahma, Lutherking, Nebojsa, Nitesh, Alice, Lucy and Susanna.
Are you the next host?

TDWG 2026 presentations
Siobhan Leachman, Sabine von Mering and other members of the BHL Wiki working group gave a variety of presentations at the Biodiversity Data Standards TDWG 2026 conference recently held in Oslo.
Although not specifically related to BHL, several presentations mentioned BHL and BHL identifiers relating to the topics being presented on, including the Wikidata type specimen data model and the Wikidata and TDWG working group data model for research expeditions.
To see the slides for Siobhan’s presentation Type specimens in Wikidata - creating a data bridge see https://zenodo.org/records/22239550. As a reminder this data model work was initiated as a result of discussions within the BHL Wiki community.
To see slides for Sabine’s presentation on Here, There, and Everywhere: Modelling Research Expeditions in Wikidata see https://drive.google.com/file/d/195ouWigCVQKUawtQ8896ffN4lH24r4Bg/view?usp=sharing
Other presentations of note included an entire BHL session where multiple BHL related presentations were given and a dedicated two-hour interactive workshop session given by Dr. Rod Page to explore some new ideas for interfaces to BHL. See the github repository for this workshop for more information and links to the various tools and interfaces shown https://github.com/rdmpage/bhl-workshop.
BHL identifiers in Wikidata
The recent BHL harvest of identifiers via Wikidata has taken place and two reports have been generated.
Newly added identifiers: https://admin.biodiversitylibrary.org/data/WDHarvestAdded.20260930.0400.csv
Identifiers needing review: https://admin.biodiversitylibrary.org/data/WDHarvestReview.20260930.0400.csv
The first csv lists all newly added identifiers to BHL and the second lists all identifiers needing a review. Editors interested are encouraged to check those identifiers listed as needing review. The BHL cataloguing group continue to work on this list to guide the improvement of the BHL catalogue.
