Module:sa-decl
Introduction
This template declines Sanskrit nouns and the numerals that have no gender, such as . Each call makes one table, so a noun with two genders or two stems needs two calls. Adjectives and participles use sa-adecl instead.
Generally, a single argument is supplied: the head, followed by the gender in angle brackets. For example, for sa, use:
sa-ndecl
The head is the nominative singular for vowel stems (devá, agní, sénā), but the bare stem for consonant stems and ṛ-stems (vā́c, mánas, rā́jan, pitṛ́). It can be written in IAST or in any script used for Sanskrit. The table comes out in the script of the head (or of the page name, if the head is in IAST), with the IAST under each form. Give the accents if you know them, since the module works out the accent of every form from them.
If the head is left out, the page name is used, as on sa:
sa-ndecl
Gender
The gender is required in every call except a manual one (see <code>manual</code> below). It is <code>m</code>, <code>f</code> or <code>n</code>, or else <code>num</code> for the numerals that have no gender or <code>pers</code> for the personal pronouns. The numerals with no gender are declined in the plural only:
sa-ndecl
The same goes for dáśan<num>, káti<num>, ṣáṣ<num> and aṣṭā́<num> (or aṣṭaú), which is accented on its endings. The numerals 1 to 4 have genders, so they are declined as adjectives with sa-adecl, e.g. sa-adecl. Giving one of them <code>num</code> is an error, and the error message gives the call to use. Their tables can also be made one gender at a time, as trí<m>, tisṛ́<f> and trí<n> on sa. The module knows that trí and catúr are plural only, so these need no <code>pl</code>.
For the personal pronouns, the head is the nominative singular, which tells the module the person: sa-ndecl for the first person and sa-ndecl for the second. Their forms are fixed, so the module gives the whole paradigm, with the Vedic and rare forms footnoted. The table has no vocative, and two more rows at the bottom give the enclitic forms: the enclitic accusative (mā, nau, naḥ) and the enclitic dative/genitive (me, nau, naḥ). The stem pages of the pronouns show just their own number, e.g. ahám<pers.sg> on sa and tvám<pers.pl> on sa.
The demonstratives sa and sa and the enclitic pronoun sa are also declined from fixed forms, with the usual genders. The head is one of their nominatives (ayám, iyám, idám; asaú, adás) or ena, and the gender picks the forms: ayám<m>, adás<n>, ena<m>. They have no vocative, and ena has rows only for the cases it has: the accusative, the instrumental singular and the genitive-locative dual (Whitney §500). They are usually declined with sa-adecl, which makes all three tables in one call.
Stem types
The module works out the stem type from the end of the head and the gender, so for most nouns the gender is all it needs. The types are:
* a-stems, masculine and neuter: devá<m>, phála<n>.
* i- and u-stems, of all genders: agní<m>, matí<f>, mádhu<n>. and its compounds have a declension of their own, which the module knows about: sákhi<m>.
* ā-stems, feminine, and masculine for root nouns: sénā<f>, and the root nouns jā́<f> and somapā́<m.root>.
* ī- and ū-stems, masculine and feminine: devī́<f>, vadhū́<f>, strī́<f>, and the root nouns dhī́<f>, bhū́<f> and ādhī́<f.root>.
* ṛ-stems, of all genders: pitṛ́<m.r:a>, dātṛ́<m.r:ā>, mātṛ́<f.r:a>, dhātṛ́<n>.
* Other consonant stems, declined as root nouns, of all genders: vā́c<f>, víś<f.final:ṭ>, marút<m>, púṃs<m>.
* as-, is- and us-stems, of all genders: mánas<n>, havís<n>, cákṣus<n>, uṣás<f>.
* an-stems, of all genders: rā́jan<m>, ātmán<m>, nā́man<n>.
* in-stems, masculine and neuter: balín<m>.
* at-stems, masculine and neuter. These are the participles, such as bhávat<m.participle> and jágat<n.feminine:jágatī>, and the stems in -vat and -mat, such as bhágavat<m>.
* añc-stems, masculine and neuter: prā́ñc<m>, pratyáñc<m>.
* The diphthong stems, masculine and feminine: gó<m>, naú<f>, rái<m>.
* vāṃs-stems, masculine and neuter: vidvā́ṃs<m>.
Irregular words get the forms that Whitney's Sanskrit Grammar gives for them, with nothing more than the gender (and the indicators their stem type always needs, such as <code>final:</code>):
* Among the root nouns, foot and its masculine compounds lengthen their vowel in the strong cases (pā́t, pā́dam), and so do the compounds in -sah and -vah. Most monosyllables keep the accent on the stem in the accusative plural (vā́caḥ), but a few have it on the ending (padáḥ), or on either (vācáḥ and vā́caḥ; Whitney §390a). anaḍváh (or anaḍúh), dánt, áp (plural only), púṃs, yúj, kṣám, dvā́r, mā́s and avayā́j have declensions of their own, and ásṛj, yákṛt, śákṛt and dós also take forms from asán, yakán, śakán and doṣán.
* The i- and u-stems sákhi, páti (see <code>husband</code> below), jáni, arí, ví and króṣṭu, and ákṣi, ásthi, dádhi and sákthi, whose weakest cases come from akṣán etc.
* dyó (or dyú, dív), nṛ́, uśánas, śván, yúvan, maghávan, áhan, ū́dhan, pathín, mathín and ṛbhukṣín.
Indicators
Anything else the module needs to know also goes inside the angle brackets, after the gender, as further indicators separated by periods, e.g. mātṛ́<f.r:a> or phála<n.novedic>. Some indicators take a value after a colon. An indicator that doesn't apply to the head's stem type is an error, so a misplaced or mistyped one shows up right away. The indicators are:
* <code>sg</code>, <code>du</code>, <code>pl</code>: show only these numbers, e.g. dámpati<m.du> on sa. They can be combined; without any of them, all three numbers are shown, or only those the word has (áp is plural only, and áp<f.sg.pl> adds the two forms of the singular the Rigveda has). Asking for a number the word has no forms for is an error. They don't go with <code>num</code>, which is always plural.
* <code>novedic</code> or <code>nv</code>: leave out the Vedic forms, including the Rigvedic forms and those of the Brāhmaṇas.
* <code>root</code>: the head is a root noun, or a compound that ends in one. This matters for stems in -ā, -ī and -ū, where root nouns are declined differently from derived stems. Monosyllables count as root nouns anyway, so in practice the indicator is needed for compounds, e.g. ādhī́<f.root>. It is also needed for a word in -at, -as or -is that is declined like a root noun, not as a participle or as a stem in -vat, -mat, -as or -is, such as : triṃśát<f.root>.
* <code>nonroot</code>: for a monosyllable in -ā, -ī or -ū that is not a root noun, to decline it as a derived stem.
* <code>pron</code>: use the pronominal declension (sárvasmai, sárveṣām) for an a- or ā-stem, e.g. sárva<m.pron>. The pronouns tá (nominative sáḥ), etá, tyá, yá and ká, and the adjectives katará, katamá, yatará, yatamá, ítara, anyá and anyatará, are declined pronominally without it, with the neuter in -at (tát, anyát; kím for ká), and the pronouns have no vocative. An unaccented ta, ka etc. needs <code>pron</code>, since there are nouns of the same form. The adjectives that are declined pronominally only in some senses (Whitney §525: pū́rva, ápara, svá and others) get the pronominal and the nominal forms side by side with <code>pron</code>, e.g. pū́rvasmai and pū́rvāya.
* <code>vrki</code>: the ī-stem originally had the vṛkī́-declension (Whitney §355ff.). The table then gives the forms of that declension as older forms beside the later ones.
* <code>r:a</code>, <code>r:ā</code>: the vowel of the strong stem of a masculine or feminine ṛ-stem, which must be given. Most nouns of kinship have a (pitṛ́<m.r:a>, accusative pitáram), while the agent nouns and a few others have ā (dātṛ́<m.r:ā>, dātā́ram; svásṛ<f.r:ā>, svásāram).
* <code>final:k</code>, <code>final:ṭ</code>, <code>final:t</code>: the consonant that a stem in -j, -ś or -h ends in at the end of a word. This can be a velar or a retroflex, and the module can't predict which, so such stems must have it. For example, víś<f.final:ṭ> gives the nominative singular víṭ, but díś<f.final:k> gives dík.
* <code>diaspirate</code>: the root has two aspirates, and the first one shows up when the second loses its aspiration. For example, búdh<f.diaspirate> has the nominative singular bhút.
* <code>participle</code>: decline a stem in -vat or -mat as a present participle, e.g. bhávat<m.participle>. Without it, such a stem is declined like , with the suffix -vat or -mat. The participles in -āt, like , need it too: yā́t<m.participle>.
* <code>nonasal</code>: the participle has no nasal in its strong stem, like . bíbhrat<m.nonasal> gives the accusative singular bíbhratam. A participle that happens to end in -vat needs <code>participle</code> as well: júhvat<m.participle.nonasal>.
* <code>feminine:</code>: the feminine stem of a neuter participle in -at, which is also its nominative dual (Whitney §443a). A neuter participle must have it: jágat<n.feminine:jágatī>. If there are two feminine stems, separate them with a comma.
* <code>contract</code>, <code>nocontract</code>: whether the stem loses a vowel before an ending that starts with a vowel. The weakest stem of an an-stem normally loses its a (rā́jñā), but not when the -an comes after a consonant and a nasal or semivowel (ātmánā); <code>contract</code> makes it lose the a there too. In a compound of a root noun in -ī or -ū, the module picks -y-/-v- or -iy-/-uv- before a vowel from the consonants before them and the accent, and <code>contract</code> and <code>nocontract</code> force one or the other. For example, vibhū́ has the accusative vibhúvam, but vibhvàm with vibhū́<m.root.contract>.
* <code>husband</code>: meaning husband, which is declined like sákhi in the instrumental, dative, ablative-genitive and locative singular (pátyā, pátye, pátyuḥ, pátyau; Whitney §343d): páti<m.husband>. Without it, and in compounds, páti is declined like agní.
* <code>han</code>: an an- or ī-stem compounded with the root han. For example, vṛtrahán<m.han> has the accusative vṛtraháṇam and the instrumental vṛtraghnā́.
* <code>svarita</code>: put a svarita on the first syllable of the vocative. This is for words that begin with a consonant and y or v and are read with an extra syllable, the way is read suvargá: svargá<m.svarita> gives the vocative svàrga. Accented heads beginning with tvy-, dvy-, try-, dry- or ny- get it without the indicator.
* <code>ḷ</code>: the Vedic ḷ(h) instead of ḍ(h) in the weak stem of a vāṃs-stem, e.g. mīḍhvā́ṃs<m.ḷ>.
* <code>manual</code>: make a manual table, containing only the forms given in the cell parameters (see below). This is for words that don't fit any stem type, either because they are too irregular or because only a few of their forms are known. The module generates no forms and adds no stem category, and the title names only the gender, e.g. "Neuter declension of आस्". The gender can be left out: <manual>. Other than the gender, only <code>sg</code>, <code>du</code> and <code>pl</code> can be combined with <code>manual</code>.
Overriding forms
If the module gets a form wrong, or a word has forms the module can't produce, you can give the forms of any cell yourself. The parameter is the case followed by the number, e.g. nom_s, gen_p or loc_d. The cases are <code>nom</code>, <code>voc</code>, <code>acc</code>, <code>ins</code>, <code>dat</code>, <code>abl</code>, <code>gen</code> and <code>loc</code>, plus <code>encacc</code> and <code>encdat</code> for the enclitic rows of the personal pronouns, and the numbers are <code>s</code>, <code>d</code> and <code>p</code>. Separate multiple forms with commas, and put a footnote in square brackets right after the form it belongs to. Use <code>-</code> for a cell that has no form. A form for a case or a number the table doesn't show, such as the vocative of a pronoun or the singular of , adds that row or column, with its other cells empty. For example, sa gives its accusative plural with two more forms, each with a footnote:

Other parameters
; note, note2, ...
: Notes to show under the table.
; nocat
: Don't add the page to any category.
; json
: Return the table's data as JSON instead of the table. This is meant for bots; the fields are described at Module:sa-decl.
More examples
* sa-ndecl: a neuter a-stem, without the Vedic forms.
* sa-ndecl: a derived ī-stem.
* sa-ndecl: an an-stem whose weakest stem loses its a (rā́jñā).
* sa-ndecl: a root noun with the strong stem pā́d and the accusative plural padáḥ.
* sa-ndecl: páti meaning husband.
* sa-ndecl: a dual dvandva compound, shown in the dual only.
* : a manual table for sa, with only these two forms.
Categories
The table puts the page in a category for its stem type, such as :Category:Sanskrit a-stem nouns, :Category:Sanskrit root-stem nouns on -ī or :Category:Sanskrit an-stem numerals. The tables of trí, catúr and their feminines add none, and neither do those of the pronouns ayám, asaú and ena and the personal pronouns.

Stem types
The module works out the stem type from the end of the head and the gender, so for most nouns the gender is all it needs. The types are:

* ā-stems, feminine, and masculine for root nouns: sénā<f>, and the root nouns jā́<f> and somapā́<m.root>.
* ī- and ū-stems, masculine and feminine: devī́<f>, vadhū́<f>, strī́<f>, and the root nouns dhī́<f>, bhū́<f> and ādhī́<f.root>.

* Other consonant stems, declined as root nouns, of all genders: vā́c<f>, víś<f.final:ṭ>, marút<m>, púṃs<m>.
* as-, is- and us-stems, of all genders: mánas<n>, havís<n>, cákṣus<n>, uṣás<f>.
* an-stems, of all genders: rā́jan<m>, ātmán<m>, nā́man<n>.
* in-stems, masculine and neuter: balín<m>.
* at-stems, masculine and neuter. These are the participles, such as bhávat<m.participle> and jágat<n.feminine:jágatī>, and the stems in -vat and -mat, such as bhágavat<m>.
* añc-stems, masculine and neuter: prā́ñc<m>, pratyáñc<m>.
* The diphthong stems, masculine and feminine: gó<m>, naú<f>, rái<m>.
* vāṃs-stems, masculine and neuter: vidvā́ṃs<m>.
* <code>ḷ</code>: the Vedic ḷ(h) instead of ḍ(h) in the weak stem of a vāṃs-stem, e.g. mīḍhvā́ṃs<m.ḷ>.

* sa-ndecl: a neuter a-stem, without the Vedic forms.
* sa-ndecl: a derived ī-stem.
* sa-ndecl: an an-stem whose weakest stem loses its a (rā́jñā).
* sa-ndecl: a root noun with the strong stem pā́d and the accusative plural padáḥ.
* sa-ndecl: páti meaning husband.
