喜欢三国的游客想必都很熟悉一句话：“姓曹，名操，字孟德，小字阿瞒，一名吉利，沛国谯郡人也。”这里的谯郡就是今天的亳州。曹操的祖父、父亲、堂兄弟（夏侯惇等）和几个儿子（曹丕、曹植）也都出生于谯郡。亳州旧城南有大量规模可观的封土堆，正是曹氏宗族留下的墓葬群。 谯城后来被曹丕封为五都之一。到了东晋、南北朝时期，这里成了南北拉锯的第一线，无论是祖逖、桓温北伐，还是北齐、北周南进，此地都是重要的军事据点，“在豫、徐、扬三州间，襟要攸关”。也是在这一时期，亳州的名称逐渐取代了谯国/谯郡的称呼。 涡河（{{lang|pinyin|Guō
