Users who are logged in can upload files.

Apart from text, Wikipedia supports the following media inline:

Also other files can be uploaded, and pages can then link to them. These files are also called "image" by the system, e.g. in "image description page". They can have a size of up to 2 megabytes (but please be reasonable).

The most common is:

  • sound -- preferred formats: Ogg Vorbis or WAV. See Wikipedia:Sound

Remarks:

  • for video see m:Video policy
  • for reasons of security executable programs are not allowed
  • do not supply an article by uploading a .txt or .doc file, see Wikipedia:How to start a page
  • for a discussion on uploading spreadsheets, see the Talk page.
  • in rare cases a html file is uploaded, e.g. as test or demonstration, e.g. Image:Temp-stylesheet-demo.html
  • occasionally a pdf file is uploaded, e.g. Image:Davis recall petition.pdf; also there is a WikiReader Image:WikiReader Free Software and Free Contents.pdf (preview version), and more are being prepared.

  • Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)
