Өвөр монгол

The term "Inner Mongolia", may perhaps be the only and the most popular name for the region in Western languages, very few come to realize that it came into existence as result of a bad translation. The Mongol terms "oevor" (as in "Oevor Mongol" or "Inner" Mongolia) and "ar" (as in "Ar Mongol" or "Outer" Mongolia) mean originally in Mongolian language "front/south" and "back/north" respectively. The fact that these terms were translated first time into Western languages according to Chinese is exactly where it went wrong. "Oevor" and "Ar" were translated wrong from Mongolian into Chinese in the first place. In other words, the Chinese translations of them should have been "北" (north) and "南" (south) instead of "内" (in/inside) and "外" (out/outside). This is largely the reason for the recent trend among "Inner" Mongolians for insisting to use "Southern Mongolia" to replace "Inner Mongolia".
