Description

The flattening of the Earth can effectively be seen as a ring of mass around the equator of a sphere. The gravitational attraction of a sphere is the same as a point mass in the centre and can be equated to the centripetal force for the orbit around the Sun. That leaves the gravitational attraction of the ring as a tangential north and south component (cyan) + a radial component to or from the centre of the Earth (not shown, as this does not contribute to the precession, only to the tides). The tangential components result in a torque (orange), which displaces the rotation axis (magenta) to a new direction (yellow).
