Amerigo Vespucci (9 March 1454 in Florence, Italy - 22 February 1512) was an Italian merchant and cartographer who voyaged to and wrote about the Americas.

The name "america" came from vespucci's first name "amerigo" or as he is also known by "Americus" he is credited with the discovery of the americas
